Bass Fishing in Pittsburgh - USA

I tried freshwater boating in the Pittsburgh-USA, (working over here this week) for the first time yesterday evening………….quite an experience.

I was picked up at the hotel in a 6litre pick-up truck towing an 18ft boat. The truck didn’t even know the boat was on the back….!!! The guy taking me works at the factory I’m doing working for this week and is scary as hell. Weighing in at about 22st, 6ft 3in and sporting a beard from deliverance, (no banjo evident) was slightly worrying. I kept saying to myself, “squeal like a pig boy” and “don’t worry it won’t hurt, you may like it” during the 1 hour journey to the lake. None of this was comforting…but couldn’t get it out of my mind all the same…!!!

Anyway…back to fishing. We arrived at the lake in the middle of a rain storm but what the hell.

We launched and headed to our target spot some 400 yds from the shore. We were looking for Bass, (don’t know which type…there are loads across here). We were using 6lb spinning gear and Rapala’s. Going was slow, (I was told this was the rain) but things picked up as dusk settled in.

We had 8 fish between me and my new buddy Wade, (who still hadn’t assaulted me). He had 5 of them and me three. I landed the biggest on a Popper lure, a Bass of 8lbs that carried more power than the Hulk himself. I also lost quite a few fish as a result of my in-experience, (which I thought I was going to get raped for at first until I realised he was actually laughing at me…..he wasn’t mad).

Anyway, after 2 hours it was time to get back to shore and I was shown how to land a trailer boat……very interesting and added to the evening’s entertainment.

I managed to make it to the hotel a virgin with three good fish so a great night was had….definitely do it again but the weather here the rest of the week makes it a no-go.

Cheers,
Jeff.
