After a few heated threads about Bass on here recently...it get's you wondering is Bass really the Holy Grail of Sea Angling?

Is it the best tasting fish ever?

Does it justify it's £15 a gram price ticket?

Does it fight the best fight ever?

Why is it such a coveted and sought after species?

Three words mate READY STEADY COOK

its always on there lol

No1's Got to be winter cod fishing for me. Not far away now either. I've had bass of 2 1/2 lb and they scrap well, but I don't think the big fish are around in enough numbers up here to target them as the number 1 species.

I think they're so wanted because they're so bloody hard to find or catch (in my case they are anyway). Cod gishing is without doubt my priority and passion but these bass have stayed away from my hook a little too long now. I have no ontention of keeping it and eating it anyway - just want to catch one and watch it swim away again - and my lass says fishing is pointless lol

1/ No, IMO probably ling in UK waters

2/ No, because it means people are tempted to keep undersized fish to eat, and a lot of people don't realise that they are undersize as they tend to compare them with the farmed bass they see in the supermarkets

3/ No, mullet on light tackle, the UK bonefish.

Personally I'd get more satisfaction from a shore caught doubler cod

Best tasting fish ?.... fresh pollock.
Best fighting fish ?.... pollock on light spinning gear.

Infact pollocks all round !

Dogfish - I love 'em! nee bones, look like puppies, plenty of them if you live next to where there be dragons and taste like our lass.

Alan you'll eat out m8

Has the Bass thing not got a lot to do with how slow growing they are as well? Hence the pressure on the limited inshore populations.

My taste buds are shot to shoite from the tabs -I can no more tell the diferrence in taste from a chateau la Jodi Marsh / A Hee Haw he haw vin blanc de superb than a lovely bit of finger caught turbot versus farmed pollock on a stick. It all taste the sham to me once the awld salt, pepper and reggae reggae suace has done its business

Terry, agree with one staement, yes pollock are good fighting fish, but they taste like sXXt, no charlie i will not eat them all i taste is iodine

well market research must tell them folks who make 1.9 million fish fingers A DAY - didnt know we ate that many ,but hey ,they a lush in a brown wholemeal bun with loads of vinegar - anyway Al ,they are now making them out of Pollack ,so they musnt be concerned ,or even more pleased with their findings

Still cant say I have actually caught a bass, but I cant imagine they fight well on a standard NE beachcaster setup, but then again neither does a 2/3 lb cod.

In areas of the country where they grow to large sizes I am told they scarp very well.

Any fish can give a good account of itself if the tackle is suited to the size of the fish. I have seen 35lb skate landed in 5 minutes but the next fish on the same gear take over an hour when the tackle and the fish are evenly matched.

The one thing we have to be thankfull about is the people who started the campaigning for bigger bass got anglers recognised as stakeholders in the future of our seas which in the long term is going to help improve our sport.

As I understand it bass are not particularly threatened and it is more a case of maintaining our existing stock and getting larger fish that is being campaigned for. There are also calls for a golden mile as a direct result of the Bass campaign, which is something that would benifit us all.

I wish mackrel grew to 10lb :D

Cheers
Dave

look ya get sick of hearing about bass, dont taste good pure sh!t ,over rated fish rather eat a mackerel or some other cr@p,and i dont eat much fish i catch ,so heres for the next month or 4 ,happy fishing

Bass are a fantastic fight on light gear, yes they taste amazing - but I'd also say that they taste best w/in a few hours of being caught. I used to fish the old power-station hot-pipe at Cambois (don't mind mentioning it since it's not there now!), took Bass to 7.5lb and Mullet to 5lb. I'd say the Mullet was equally as nice to be honest. Bass has a less oily flesh but similar in texture to mackeral and similar species, cooks nicely no matter how you approach it, probably would smoke well. Go to a Chinese supermarket and get them frozen, little difference to fresh bar the cost which is a lot less.

Fight wise, if you fish for the sport of the catch, then fish for flatties on very light gear in an estuary or mackeral on a carp rod - you'll get more fun and more likely to catch.

btw - I've seen the water fin-to-fin of bass off that (now gone) pipe, seen double figure sized fish in the water (ignoring baits the swines!) and landed many good sized catches (released or stopped when I'd caught what I could eat, but will admit to swapping a fish or two for an evenings meal from another Bass lover of oriental origins.), seen a lot of lads there though who were out for the money, taking as many fish as possible then heading into Newcastle to flog them to the restaurants at a premium :-/

I hadn't realised that they taste like Iodine to other people. I like those Iodized throat lozenes so that may account for my high rating for taste. Funny old world !!
