bass tactics

Guys
Over the last few years i have been walking the dogs and watching lots of venues - have seen loads of fish topping, feeding activity, etc. what is the best way to target bass. I saw a Matt Hays programme where he used a carp rod with a 2-3oz lead rag worm wading in and then chucking behind any surf letting the water do the biz with the bait - would this work in our area if not what would.

personally i will be using those tactics as well as plugging, though i would be tempted to use razor and flapper mackrel as well as the rag, plus peeler is always a good bait if you can lay your hands on any

The tactic i found works well is.........use a controllor float(the kind that wobbles in the water when u wind in) with a small white redgill or raglu attatched to a 8-10ft trace behind it. Just use it like your spinning. I learned this at a place called Torness where there is a warm water current, but ive had some success from beaches doing this aswell.

Hi guys

I was fishing @S/Shields Pier last September @ the first gate just off the rocks,tide was coming in and i was only using rag worm and caught 2 small bass 1 @ 1/2lbs and 1 @ just over 1lbs i was just casting over the surf and seemed to work but as tide was coming in quick rigs where catching on the rock's and seaweed but not many rigs lost.

times to start could be now with the mild winter and the warm weather we have had, i would however not post where you caught if you get a good catch, sounds harsh but gill nets have a nasty habit of appearing at posted marks

I watched a guy in portugal, jif lemon half full of water, trailing a small white redgill. Apparently very difficult to get hold of here. so if youre going to the med, get some. Im going to try that tactic this year.
Bouncing bettys are good too, with a single ragworm.

I use a medium weight golf ball, :dont laugh: with a small screw eye, the ones used on the end of net curtain wires.just drill a 2mm hole into the shell and screw in the eye, then clip a swivel on with a 5ft fluorocarbon trace size 1/0 with a big gape,add rag or sandeel.it works on open beaches,because the bass dont take any notice of the ball in the surf but its the ball that's imparting life into the bait . try using poppers and plugs off the rock ends but you need an area with a bit tide. most important time is dusk and dawn. hope this helpsyou jason

Saw loads of them in Tesco about 6 weeks before Easter next to the pancake mix. I wouldn't go to Portugal for them.

I used to use the natural coloured redgill's, found they were best on an early morning just as dawn broke. If the water isn't churning then a light line seems to pay better dividends too, they're easily spooked at times..

I once caught about 30 size bass in and hour and a half on spinners from a north east mark!

Proably the best session of my life, was excellent fun on the carp rod

Good luck Jason. I've never caught one myself but only targetted them twice. Resulted in a 4 lb cod one time and a pound and a half coalie the next. I've pm'd you of a mark near sunderland which I've heard of a few catching bass (and the boats aren't allowed near either)

I think that session was a one off, I have caught dozens though over the years none of any massive size but sometimes 5 or 6 small schoolies in a session. They tend to come and go though, most of mine have been caught from Sandy Bay beach with the red letter day happening next to cambois pipe though i suppose as its not there any more the bass will have gone too?
