Beach Bass

Went up to one of the sandy beaches in Northumberland Sunday morning (don't want to be secretive but remembered that someone once warned that people sometimes net the beaches). Anyway I was just flattie bashing and didn't really expect much. So I was chuffed to catch my first ever size Bass - about 2lb. Gave me a lovely slack-liner too.

Feel daft about not saying where but, to be honest, they can turn up on any of the sandy beaches can't they? I'll certainly be out after more tho.

Cheers everyone.:)

Well done mate, great fish to catch unexpectedly, nice size too. Only wish I could catch them more often by accident cos I haven't caught one when I've deliberatley set out to catch one.

Think I'd be in a bit of a dilema if and when I catch 1, should I put it back or should I eat it?!?!?!?!!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!:D

the legal keeping size is 36cms

people can and do argue the morals here and elsewhere about whether the legal size is big enough but as it stands that is the size limit

the same dilemna applies to Whiting, Cod etc as a "just size" fish for a lot of species is pitifully small

Caught a 40cm bass in S/W Scotland...only the second Bass I've ever caught...tasted great

Although the MAFF size limit is 36cm the NFSA size limit is 41cm. Even at 41cm I think the limit is still too low.

A 41cm bass weighs around 1lb 6oz, and the fillets tend to be quite small. Great tasting fish, but better to take fish over 2lb imo.

I fish catch and release when it comes to Bass, but I wouldn't think less of anyone taking a fish for the table.

However I agree with Sean, 45 - 50cms, which should be around to 2 - 3lbs should be the minimum in my opinion. At that size, the fish would probably be 7 or so years old and had a chance to spawn a couple of times.

The 35cms size is still a juvinille fish (Although it will probably be about 4 - 5 years old) and may not yet have spawned yet.

The NFSA (National Fed' of Sea Anglers) doesn't actually exist anymore...it's now Angling Trust and it seems that all of the previous guidelines for sizes have gone and they now defer to the size limits laid down by DEFRA (if anyone knows different please jump in)

http://www.defra.gov.uk/marine/pdf/fisheries/minimumfishsizes.pdf

Which is why a lot of clubs introduce their own minimum sizes that are above the legal sizes laid down

They need to sit down and sort proper sizes out!!!

Me as well, and also I agree with ye about the size. I had a few 41cm ones the other night but they were canny thin. I think the recommended limits are too small for most fish anyway.

Preaching to the converted mate ;) vested interests involved among other things as we all know

I only commented that I'd kept a legal fish to demonstrate the point that I was acting within the rules laid down. If I caught one over this side of the country I wouldn't hesitate to put it back as the N/E fishery by all accounts is still to establish itself

Not having a go mate, just stating a point.;)

The UK Government, via DEFRA, lay down only certain Minimum Landing Sizes (MLSs). However, with conservation in mind, the AT provide Recommended Retention Size Limits (RRSLs) for the majority of fish likely to be caught in UK waters. An RRSL is a suggested size for a fish below which it should returned to the sea. Should there be any dispute on the measurement of a fish, the Match Organisers Master Measure will be the deciding measure. All fish are to be measured from the tip of the snout to the end of the tail fin, except Skates and Rays which are to be measured wing tip to wing tip.
