Beginners Rod

Areet,

What Rod (All Rounder) would you recommend for an absolute, never fished before, beginner?
Either new or something to look out for second hand.

Cheers

That is probably more difficult than what to buy for someone who has been fishing a while. If it doesn't suit him and he can't cast it then it could put him off fishing. Probably the try before you buy thing yet again mate. If it is a friend of yours let him have a go with your rod and see how he gets on first

Jim.

One of the Diawa Supercast range, Century CCC or something from Sonik. My advice would be to buy a rod that your not going to outgrow in six months time though. Look for an all round rod suitable for the North East that's 13 or 14 feet long.

cheap 10' spinning rod and reel combo for under £30, start off in the harbours and estuaries, if it's not his thing then there's little money wasted, if he catches the bug then progress up to a more serious piece of kit.

Agree that's a good start...if he wants to fish the beaches tho...maybe as Jim says and lend him your gear ;)

it realy depends on the person mate,
like how big they are, there phiscal strength all that sort of stuf
we have groups of beginers out all of the time, poeple who have never fished before and havent got a clue about the sport,
we use 2 diffrent size rods depending on the person, we use a 9ft shakespeare tide water peir rod, there perfect for the beginers, nice and stiff but easy casting, and for the bigger people we use 12 ft shakespeare tide water beach casters, once againg nice and stif for the wind but realy easy to cast, and they have a good cast on them, there fixed spool rods and there rather cheep, whos the rod for mate?

My first rod was a £40 setup, Shakey surf cast or somthing, but i quickly out grew it. Went from there to a Reel Sport VFM Sport, Great rod and a bargin £120 new i think! got a second hand one that i might be willing to part with for the right price

Thinking of getting something so I can take me old man out now and again.

Something cheap would probably do for the amount of use it'll get, but not too cheap as he's not a small bloke and could probably give it some stick.

The only problem i had with my cheep shakey rod, apart from Chris jamming it in the boot lid lol, was that i couldnt get a great lot of distance with it apart from that it was great, see Terry mate he'll sort you out, or if you want to borrow my VFM and sea if he likes it your more than welcome.

Rt Axe was my first proper rod and i loved it so much i had 2. Agree it is stiff but a good caster will be able to chuck it canny far. I saw a post in the casting bit where someone used it for tournament casting.

you should have kept the penn rod mate lol im sure ive got a spare rod he can have ill have a look about the spare bed room mate (i had a telescopic rod lying around somewhere which was pretty good for casting and over rough ground) im sure i can give him a reel aswell as ive got plenty fixed spool reels in a black bag in the spare bedroom
