Big casting?...

I can whack a bait out about 80-90 yards if it's clipped down. Is it worth being able to cast further than that in the north east? Would it make a difference to catches? So often the fish seem to be close in....

Basically - is it worth learning to pendulum cast 120-150yards for fishing the north east??????

90yds with a baited rig is not to be sniffed at if your just using an over head thump, you dont have to take the penulum route why not learn to cast off the ground (hi inertia) easier to learn and a bit safer if other people about, but make sure your rods up to it as this cast will compress your rod in a split second, unlike the pendulum which winds your rod up slowly

Learn it and it's there to use. I'm getting lessons this sunday so I've got another weapon I my arsenal but won't be using it all the time... But have the option too

Just been mate and I'm really impressed. There's a lad on here (arc) that does them for free. Top bloke and a good teacher. Message him and he'll be in touch. Might wait a couple of weeks but it's defo worth it. Just off the ground first though but you still get plenty of distance

when there is a good surf running a good cast will keep your line abve the waves making it more comfortable fishing.

only downside is you have to keep practising your cast pretty regulary so your distances dont drop.

The reason I wanted to cast further initially coz I couldn't clear the breakers at Marsden beach and it was a night mare. Can imagine alot of practice is needed to get good distances but one you know the basics it will always be better. I'm putting half the power in now and Casting so much further. It's there for when I need it.

Don't know what casting method you are using right now, I would guess, an overhead thump, but timing is critical. I watch many anglers styles of casting, and can often see how much they could improve their distance and smoothness by casting when the lead is swung towards them instead of when it's at it's furthest away point.
There are many occasions when distance is a useful weapon, ie: flat beaches, in the lower Tyne estuary, some of the Northumberland rock marks, just to get in the tidal movement on a calm day etc: etc:
Just to add, I can only semi pendulem cast, but with my Daiwa 7-ht can hit well over the 100mtrs with clipped down bait on. So I would say yes, it would be worth your while going over the ton.

Hi Canman - thanks for the advice - I suppose my cast is an overhead thump with a swing, if you get what I mean. But, you're right, I've been making the mistake, for years!, of casting when the lead is at a far point away from me... Looking forward to lots of practice when back home for xmas fishing.

Interesting that you mention the Lower Tyne cos I was thinking that long casts might be an advantage there. I've fished the middens and the haven rocks a few times and caught very little - maybe 100yards plus could help... It'll definitely help to get over the Titanic-size snags at the Ice House too!

Distance is a must on shields pier mate, just to get past all the sh*t thats been lost close in, it must be like a giant spiders web down there made up of lost gear. Like said chuck with the lead inwards and it gives you a chance to load the rod up. pendulum not necessary just a well timed ground or ower the heed chuck.

Interesting post mate, glad I read it - I've been doing the same and trying to hit it when the lead was at it's at its far point. I only logged on to see what happened in the days open, now I've got something to work on at Hendon on Tuesday. Cheers Canman
