Big Cod Bait

So it is the time of year when we have the best chance to catch a monster. I am just wondering what do you all think is the best bait to (hopefully) land a lunker bucket mouth?

I have read that once cod reach a certain size their diet changes to mostly fish based so should I be using macky or bluey rather than mostly lug and/ or squid, mussel etc. at this time of year?

Any thoughts?

Cheers

Just landed a 5lb cod tonight using frozen black and peeler. Used what I had in the freezer. Caught another 2lb 10 mins later on the same bait.

Big fish had a belly full of sand eels.

I wud never cast the same bait back in the water the 2lb fish must have been clamin peach;)

Even as a tight arse jock I draw the line at chucking the same bait back in although I suppose I could keep using it as my "lucky bait".

A whole Joey Mackeral (head and tailed to let the juices flow) or a big fillet of the same is a good big fish bait.
Also a try a Livebait rig if theres small Whiting about.

like dave says a live bait rig for pin whiting or rockling its not just the bait the vibration off the caught distressed fish the lateral line on the cod plays a big part

you can put what u want on if the fish takes it it takes it,av seen folk use the best and biggest of everything and some guy jaybaiting with a small rag or makkie strip will pull the doubler in beside you, fishings like that if its your turn it just happens, atb plum;)

never a truer word spoken

i had my first double figure codling when i was 16, using a single ragworm! (and it wasn't a big ragworm either). my other 11 doublers have been on either lugworm or crab. it's just down to luck, i don't think you can really target one.

different marks , different time of year= different baits each place/time.

I mean I wouldn't go to ryhope without lug or yellows/ blacks. lesson learned

My PB shore cod at 7lb came on a single dead ragworm that had been out for a good 30 mins.
Just using up my bait and got talking to a fellow fisherman for ages, the bite broke the conversation and boom - my PB.

If they are there.....

Without doubt the 2 main factors are bait and conditions there places around my area that will fish after a blow up but in flat calm you might aswell fish in ya bath. If you have better bait fresh worm good peelers ect that always makes a difference. Variety with bait really does help around us. Fresh mussell is a very underrated bait. Fishes like a good un. I change my bait after every cast but have seen lads add to there bait chuck back out and catch

got a 9and1/2lbs fish doing exactly that, after every cast I just added another rag onto my pennel rig ended up with a massive snot ball of about 10 rags, the fish took the lot into its gob and It hooked it's self on the top hook
