Birth of a new shad ... ;p)

Well all this weather has kept me in the garage, nothing else for it but to "whittle away" .... ahem whittle, as in carving a piece of wood :)

With Tony's Slinky Mk 1 already sorted and being put into production and his Mk 2 under the knife I thought it only best to make use of the hours forced ashore awaiting the season start to start on Shad Slinky Mk 3 ... :)

here it is in a quick storyboard.

First the almost carved master ...... balsa and scalpel to the fore ...

slinky3wooden.jpg

Then (after several coats of primer and polishing), after first lining the bottom of the mould with resin to stiffen it and arranging some support for closure of the two halfs along with location posts and injection spru the master is laid in place in the first half mould....

Then when all is level and the split line is across the top, the silicon RTV material is poured ... to the split line ... :)

Not wanting to bore yous with all the gritty details I'll just cut to a couple of pics of the first two test colours ..... :)

Hey presto, the Mk 3 in my favourite colour ...... orange(y)

Just need to get out there now and find which is the most attracted and to make modifications on the next moulds to take in the benefits of colour/shape/texture etc.

how long now ? ....... about 8 weeks ---- whooo hoooo

i think i may need to purchase some of them.....

or are they "limited " to slinky....:D

nice way to spend the downtime norman...

This is the great thing about Norman - and it is a good thing I promise - it is that he takes the spark of an idea then explores it the n'th degree :D:D

Mk2 is "finny" LOL :D

Love the orange colour

8 weeks sounds like an eternity :(:D

I'm liking your work team Slinky. All your work in the garage will soon see the time pass to the start of the new season.

Cool Norman, do you just push the hooks through them after they are made, and do you have any weight on the hooks?

Ray, the hooks have a special jig head designed for this shad and are moulded in place (fitted before injecting the material) - we make the jighead moulds ourselves to suit the shad

The jig head mould ......

and the method of fitting prior to closing the mould box .... ( :) hold it down with a ruler then push the other half on :) :) )

I got a few types of jig head moulds as its difficult to get exactly the shape and size you want without it touching the sides and spoiling the shad .... seems ok at this point ..

no intentions to sell any rob, too much hard work making them :) :) , however if they work then I'm sure you'll find some coming your way "for test purposes" :D

Norman ,top Job well done , could explain what you are using to inject the hot plastisol ? Would it be possible to make a two piece mould to inject two colours ie white belly / blue back ???

hi mate
I use a 50ml plastic syringe to inject, but the syringe plastic is similar to the plastisol in its melt temparature (probs about 10-20degs higher) so care must be taken or the syringe melts as well, the first few we made i managed about 3 shads per syringe but lately getting far better. :)
for colours, thats a challenge for the future, we have painted the base of some white (like commercial shads) and they look good but not experimented (yet) with two colour plastic ..... ps this material (plastisol) hates paint... it takes days to dry instead of minutes :)
good question !

Thanks Norman, look forward to you trying the injecting of two colours.
Would you also know where I could get shore 84/87 RTV from ??

Brilliant Norman,
When I was looking into making them, 2 things might help if you haven,t already thought about it

Syringe was a problem and a stainless ear syringe or a swagelok (expensive) came into the equation

The mould for 2 colours was going to be split in half down the body depth way, (if that makes sense) with 2 injection points for the 2 colours, with injection of top half and bottom half injected symoultaneously so the liquid would flow to the head and tail and hopefully create the"rhubarb and custard effect".
I never took it further because of graft, I was going to use liquid latex which available in many colours.

Great job Norman, that's given me inspiration again coz I go through loads

I liked your previous comment of "glum looking" Mark :) :) so carved it into these as well :)

Norman I am just obsessed with The Glums at the moment because Lynn and I are directing it...................... better known as Les Miserable!

Glum or not, I think the work you are putting into this is incredible and you will be rightly chuffed as.....when you catch your first fish on them.

You deserve plenty bigguns Norman.
