Blackmill Hall

Was playin football in Blackmill hall, county durham yesterday and there was quite a large fast moving river behind the pitch. There was at least 5-6 fly anglers on it and i was wondering what they were catchin and what river this was?? any ideas?

I have pals that live in the area and might have a look down if its gonna be worth it???

Hi Andy, you wern't playing a team called the Dragons were you? Could the place be called Blackhall Mill, near Chopwell? If it was it would be the river Derwent mate.

Yep, certainly sounds like Blackhall Mill, although I've never seen that many anglers on that stretch before. Actually, I can't remember ever having seen anyone else fishing there when I've been there. It's a great little river though, with plenty of little wild brownies and a few grayling too. That section is controlled by Derwent AA, who have the river from the reservoir down to Lintzford and day tickets are available from the Tyne Rivers Trust.

Oh, and the Derwent below Lintzford and all the way down to Swalwell is controlled by the Axwell Park and Derwent Valley Angling Association. However, they don't have a website, so are a bit tricky to track down - probably your best bet would be to ask in somewhere like Frasers.

that'll be the one! Nah mate we were playing a team called West Park, theres a good chance the Dragons play in the same place, nice little pitch actually. The river looked spot on, one of the lads had to cast out to save the ball being taken downriver. Had a wander along the bank after the match but the lads fishing had moved further down.
