Fished Blyth with Gregg tonight

Sea looked fishy, although it had died down quite a lot since the weekend...

Baits were Rag and Lug...caught nowt for ages, then a good rattle on my rod resulted in a fat Coalie of 36cm guesstimated to weigh about 1.5lbs...nice little fish :D

It was still very quite on the fish front - Gregg did eventually pull in a micro Codling ;)

Canny night - Good Craic as ever...and it's nice to get the winter season off to a moderate start :)

Cheers

Tony

I it was good craic even if the fish didn't want to play. I had a nightmare with my reels tonight like:o:mad: 3 different reels kept nesting:mad:

The pic didn't do your coalie justice bud it looked a lot bigger close up.

have you changed the line on your reel to something smaller?

Used 4 different reels mate!!! 2 had 30lb line on and the other 2 18lb with a shock leader:confused: Just a bad night. Lost about 4 rigs on a clean beach:o

They need a good clean as they were getting sand in them last night.

What? Sand on Blyth beach? Never! :o:D:D Seriously though, there do seem to be a few patches on the beach (particularly at the top end) where it's like fishing over sandpaper or something. I've had 15lb line snapping every cast before I've even pulled my gripper out & lost leader, rig, the works - after inspecting the end of the line it's as though it's been sanded away to nothing for about the last 10-15 yds. I guess it's a combination of tide & shingly patches - moving along the beach a bit solves the problem.

Nice coalie by the way - no sign of any whiting or bass? :)

Not this time...Blyth Beach is still a bit of a mystery to me at times IE how/when is best to fish it etc

Big casts/little casts?

Big/medium/dying/flat calm seas?

H/Water or L/Water?

Fished all variations of above and still find it very hit and miss :)

I prefer to fish the last 2 hours down and the first 2 hours back in.

We need to find some decent high water shots like.

Lots of bites but only the 2 landed. I was using 3/0 hooks and caught a tiny fish and Tony was using size 2 hooks and pulled in a good size coalie.

I lost something in the surf on my last chuck but don't know what it was. Felt like weed as it was canny heavy but there was no weed on the beach or in the surf when i went to have a look.

I generally also like to fish it last 2 hours or so down & 2 up, but have had some good bags at the top end (bandstand area) at high tide. It's usually a case of searching out the holes, and I like to fish it with a bit a of sea on - not too big however; if it is I'll usually head down to Whitley beach.

It can be hit & miss though - I've fished successive nights, similar conditions, and had completely different results. It used to be one of the best codling beaches years ago - I think my club's record of over 70lb of fish (by one angler) in 3 1/2 hrs came from there. :)

Hi mate, it's Whitley Bay - I think that record was set a few years ago mind (I wasn't living in the area at the time - had moved down south) and heard about it when I rejoined after moving back to the N/E last year. Yep, one heck of a bag, I think it was about 50 fish (treble shots of codling just about every cast for 3 1/2 hours) - don't seem to get sessions like that anymore!! :)

Tony, I used to fish Blyth beach a hell of a lot, you have to do a lot of work to get the best results mate. What g-force says about the Whitley Bay club record is perfectly true. You have to get down the day or tide before you intend to fish, have a good look around and find out where the best holes are and get a mark on them.

I have had great nights on there casting just 20 or 30 yards into a hole while people just along from me have been blasting towards the horizon without a bite. You then get the inevitable question "What bait are you using", then "Just the same as me you must be lucky". Aye, lucky I came and saw where the hole was lol.

I found that things started to pick up on there around about this time of year and more so as soon as the Sand Eels showed up (very soon). You must have loads of nice Lug with you to fish it, sometimes as a cocktail and sometimes by itself. That was the one thing that I could never understand lol, sometimes just Lug sometimes with Rag, Mussel or Razor. I think the best results I had were with just Lug but sometimes you would hardly get a bite without something else. I used to fish a lot with a mate from Blyth and he fished it regularly with frozen Sandeel with good results, I tried them lots of times and I don't think I ever had a fish with them  . Strange, what will work for one will not work for another.

I prefered the Sluice end of the beach at low water, also the middle toilet area and behind the farm. Low water I prefered the north end, farm or middle toilets. Fishing the north end you can get away with just a pair of waterproof boots if you want but the other marks you will need waders, even if it is just to give someone a piggy back off the sandbar lmao. There are usually some good sandbars with big holes behind them so to get on early you must have waders. I have had lots of good fish to about 7 1/2 lb off that beach and also some cracking bags too. It is always worth a shot if there has been a good sea running for a couple of days.

Jim.

I thought that might get your attention mate, and by the way you missed a t off the end. Did you guess before you read it or was it a nice surprise lmao??

Jim.
