went to blyth peir this afternoon, got set up had a few casts caught 2 rockling in them first few casts then seen a boat putting out nets just 70yards off the peir didnt realise how close it was till i cast over it and lost aload of gear they took it in after an hour seen them get what i think was a salmon and that was it then they put it back out
so i was stuck the whole time just casting a few yards out and only caught a few small colies, still it was a nice afternoon.

Is there not some sort of regulation or law that stops them casting nets inside a set marker or shipping lane?

Seems a bit stupid to put your nets that close in and risk a cargo ship getting wrapped in them, I'm sure the skipper of a big boat would be really chuffed if that happened.

And if they were catching fish it was probably a Sea Trout which is a bloody shame because there aren't a lot of them in the Blyth any more, probably because of said "fishermen" casting nets in the estuary.

it wasnt in the eastury it was the sea side, porbaly was a sea trout i bearly seen it myself just another fisherman said it was a salmon. was just curious if they were allowed to just put nets out and just infrount of the pier as i wasnt the only one who lost tackle in the net a few people did, they could of been fishing for tackle

This comes up every year both there and at Shields.....as i understand it as long as the net is not blocking the river mouth i.e stopping the fish getting up then it can be cast out at either side of the pier/mouth.

Think someone sat at a desk and thought if the stupid fish cant find the river mouth it should be caught when writing that one.

Anyway comes up every year and will go on for a few weeks yet over the summer months.

You have to live with it or fish some other location, i dont like it but it has been around longer than most, if not all of us have been fisherman.

And please, it may pee people off but dont try and cast at them as this has happened in the past...could result in fights or worse, the pier closed to anglers during this time.

I'm just disappointed that it's still practised at all. The last few years have seen very few Sea Trout running the blyth and if if it was then thats one less at least.

I also find it disturbing that DEFRA in there "infinite wisdom" ?? haven't imposed some sort of ban for close to shore fishing.

A sensible limit of half a mile would be fair, at least then fish that spawn inshore in shallow water would stand a chance, or at least set up a sea haven area where no fishing at all from boats is allowed within "X" miles of a designated marker again just to give the fish a chance to breed.

I do know the other side of the coin needs to be cateredfor and commercial fishermen have to make a living but taking fish that close in seems a bit unfair for the fish and for other anglers - we do take fish but the sensible ones only keep what they are going to eat and return the rest safely and quickly.
