Blyth pier 241108

I fished today betweed 2.15 pm and 8.15 pm using two rods about 10 yards from the bend (towards the end) using rag, mussel, squid. The sea was canny as the pier gave shelter from the huge sea, it did not however give shelter from the gale force wind which was a pain in the ass!!

the result ???

one solitary codling about 2lb. disappointing given the conditions. Plenty of others fishing but only saw maybe 7-8 fish all day, none of them any bigger that the one i had.

Still i had thought i had lost my brand new mobile all day, but had a result when i got back to car and found it had dropped out of pocket down side of seat!

Unlucky there wasn't many fish about as it's been fishing very well the last few days. But you never blanked so that's a bonus. I know what you meen about the wind. I was on there in the blizzards on Sunday morning at 5am for 3 1/2 hrs and my hands were ready to drop off!

well at least you got one and found ya phone:)

going down on wed night as the sea will have
droped off a bit (well it might)

Bad luck Ian,still at least you caught one. It's a strange venue that, it can change from one tide to the next, nothing on one and a boatload on the next. A couple of years ago it fished much better on a lot of day tides than it did on the night tides. I've never been able to work it out properly, I have fished it when you would expect them to jump out of the water and no one has caught a thing. Other times when the sea wasn't as good we had a bag full.

the fish i had was in daylight, to be honest it was probably on of very few placec actually fishable today. Think it might have been a bit dangerous at quarry hole where i was originally going to go

I just noticed what bait you were fishing with, I always found that Lug was always my most successful bait on there. Sometimes it would fish with Rag or Mussel or Crab but some of the best sessions I had were with Lug and Razor. I usually took the lot though as you never knew which would be the best if any lol.

Strange one

Strange one

I know exactly what you mean Jim, it's the only pier where if I'm walking onto it and the people coming off have caught nothing I'm not dissheartened because as you say one tide it can be bad the next one good so I'm always optimistic of the fish coming on.

Fished it about 4 years ago and had one exactly eight pound, had to walk it back up the pier to the beach because I didn't dare lift it (I know, should have had a drop net).

The only thing that spoiled that night was I managed to take a big lump out of one of the wooden posts at the car park entrance with the side of my Audi :red:

Just pleased it was a company car.

i agree i always prefer lug to rag, i just refuse to pay tackle shop prices for a few tiny blow lug.

I have lost count of people that have asked me when it fishes best, high or low water. All I can say is yes as I have had great sessions at just about all states of the tide. Some of the best fish I have had have been around low water but have had good bags at all times. It always makes it more scary pulling a decent one up when it is low water too lol.

I'm hoping to get down there sometime midweek - as many have said it's nearly impossible to predict when it'll fish best: in some ways that's why I like it - some of my best bags on there have been fished on a whim when I've had a few hours to spare & gone down regardless of time & tide.

One Codling of 2lb is good! (Maybe that says a lot about my fishing;)).
I always opt for more ragworm than lugworm cos it always seems like better value and they seem more meaty and sturdy for casting but maybe should think again.

Ross, If I was given the choice of just one bait and nothing else it would be Lugworm. I know Crab has it's times when it will outfish Lug but I would say over a full season it can't be touched. Just my humble opinion, I know some people will disagree and they are entitled too but over the years it has done better for me than anything else. Especially on Blyth beach and Pier, but also around the north east area.

Jim, I am going to take your word as gospel. If I don't catch more fish from now on at least I can blame someone else lol:D
