Blyth Pier - early morn 24/06

Headed down to Blyth Pier early this morning - I had the place to myself so headed straight for the end corner & got my baits in the water about 1.30am. First cast resulted in this double-shot

the flounder being about 30cms. Nearly every cast resulted in either one of these little fellas

or one of these

All the flounders were a canny size - around the 30cm mark with the best about 35. The dabs were all small though, as was this little chap

As the sun started to come up (here's an arty shot of sunrise over Mr Richie-Fishy :D)

I was joined by a few others on the end and a few fishing down by the bend, so I switched over to the spinning rod. Between about 4-5 am I managed to bag seven of these critters

with a few others dropping off - I even let one run for a good 5 minutes to see if it would show any signs of tiring-out but he just kept going!! By about 6am things were slowing down so I decided to put the baits out again and finally got what I'd really come for

a lovely fat plaice weighing in at just under 2 lbs :D Also had another couple of flounders as well, and had the occasional spin as the odd mackerel was still turning up, and managed one more.

All in all a pretty good morning, finally called it a day about 8.30, so time now for a quick sit-down then I guess it's time to get filleting!!!

PS, reckon there must have been about 30 maccies caught by the time I left; most from the end but I did see a few come in down by the bend.

Cheers, Gary :)

Nice 1

Nice 1

Enjoyed your report and seeing your photo's, always nice to see an arty one.
Watch out norman someone else is snapping the sun coming up.
Nice one mate.

Thanks lads, it was a pretty enjoyable morning, only a few brief lulls in activity :D I'm guessing quite a few will have been caught this afternoon as well; shame the forecast for the next few days shows strengthening easterly winds (again!) :( Tomorrow morning should be worth a shot though - just don't think I can manage two nights in a row these days ;);)

Cheers, Gary :)

Nice fish well done. I fished this morning on blyth pier from 10.0clock until 1.pm didnt catch a thing, the guy next to me had two small flatties and another guy spinning had 1 sandeel but it was a good 3 hours out.

Thanks for the shot m8, canny fish caught too.. i blanked on the bait side but must of been in the wrong plaice, cant believe there was more macs caught! goin on blyth pier some time this week i think. might bump into ya m8. crackin report too..:D

Got most of the flounders & dabs during darkness throwing about 2/3rds of the way across directly towards the lighthouse - from your shot I reckon a lob of about 60 yards towards me on the west pier would have had you into the fish. I got the plaice later (about 6.15) along with a couple more flounders throwing out about 130 yards towards the mile marker.

I might have another look friday morning - just depends on the weather which at the moment looks a bit iffy; it needs to be good & glassy like this morning to get the plaice. Once it gets into mackerel season proper, I'll be breaking out the float and fishing back down the pier before the bend - it just gets too loony fishing on the end:D

Cheers, Gary :)

PS the mackerel were all caught close in (no more than 20 or 30 yards out) and were quite deep. Don't make the chav mistake of thinking you need to welly out your spinner as far as you can - more often than not the fish'll be almost at your feet.
BTW, all the flounders & plaice were caught on rag tipped with a scrap of mackerel, all the dabs took fresh crab.
