fished blyth pier lastnight from around 7-10.30. first fish was an eel of about 2lb. also caught a small coalie and a dab. bait used was mackerel. the wind was howling and for most of the time i was the only one on the pier with the occasional person coming to try for mackerel but there were none caught.

me and a mate got to the pier for about 11 karl must of just missed you we fished till about 2ish and your right the wind was howling any way between the two of us we had 3 coalies probably the biggest ones we've caught of there and a small dab each then went on to north shields docks and caught about 20 crabs and 15 snags damn docks not be going back there in a hurry.....

eels banned

eels banned

there is a ban on taking eels, i cant specify the ban but i put them back anyway, have had 2 in the past 2 sessions and they always go back, had to cut the hook of the one off the pier as it was deep hooked.

Pretty sure there is a ban on taking eel at the moment unless you are a good few miles offshore.
I must admit I never knew about the eel ban.then again it's probably over 15 years since I done any serious bait fishing.and probably over 25 years since I used to fish for big eels in the wanny estuary.

I only read about it on this forum sometime recently , otherwise I would not have a clue :D

Hi Karl, I went on the pier 2nite, about 6ish, fished till 8.30, only saw 2macky caught on the end, I had 1 coalie an 1 flounder, returned safe, water still a bit murky, the flatty I caught still had a hookin its mouth and trace attached, sinker( spider ), but managed to clear it and it went away swimm like a gudd'n, 2 of our ethnic Bro's where catch undersize coalies and keeping em for the pot!!!!!!:mad::mad:

unlucky wayne, i was thinking about biking down but didnt think there would be much caught. everytime i go on the peir theres always people keeping undersize coalies, but they dont have a size limit so they can take asmany as they want...

They do it all the time wayne as well you know, but it's a cultural thing you wouldn't understand.

erm, there is, I think it's something like 35cm.....

wasn't fully sure, knew it was similar to some other species tho.

tip - i used to use electricians tape in various colours on my rod, measured from the tip ring down and put a band of tape slightly larger than the minimum sizes for the main species we catch with the intent of keeping. saves buying a measuring board and gives a quick and easy check on the size.

Well done mate, thinking of fishing there on Monday.
Someone mentioned that coalies don't have a size limit.....!!!! according to the National Federation of Sea Anglers (NFSA) they do, same as a Cod @ 35cm.

Good luck Guys

well i thourt they did to, but when two people came along blyth peir when i was fishing there was a guy with a bag full of coalies and and the two guys from northumberland fisheries (somthing like that) said its ok because they were coalies and they dont have size limits? surley they would know that they have size limits if they did? they even gave me a booklet with loads of size limits of fish.

That's a new one on me Shaun. I always follow NFSA size limits link attached. Sea Fish Size Limits - NFSA Size Limits - Sea fishing - Sea Angling Resource. The Northumerbland Fisheries Site doesn't have anything about size limits. I would be surprised if they acted differently to the NFSA, but if that's what they said mate that's what it must be.

Gud luck

Looked on the North Eastern Sea Fisheries Committee site and its there in the size limits. I am assuming Saithe is the same as a coalie though.
