what is the best thing to put on boat deck as i am laying new ply floor.i was thinking about using roofing felt to cover it any sogestings

Think people just put sand or shot blast in with the paint used for the deck to make it non-slip.

use a tin of anti slip floor paint from a chandlers about a a litre usually does most boats


do not use sand or shot blast as its an abrasive and will cause damage wherever it gets

the stuff made for the job has plastic grains in it and works great without causing any damage to anything

Interdec paint from International is the best non slip deck paint - but its just normal marine enamel paint with glass beads in, and you can buy the glass beads to add to normal paint

sand is no more abrasive than the glass beads, mix it up with the paint and stick it on, its locked up and sealed in the paint so ain't going to go anywhere

dont use roofing felt, the aggregate will come off in no time leaving slippy asphalt, which in a year of being in a marine environment will crack and break up

if your putting ply wood down you need to seal the ply as best as possible, so get some fibreglass resin, mix some glass perls or sand in that and coat every single bit of the ply with it, including underneath. and especaill the edges. It'll soak into the ply and make it much much more water proof than just paint and last for years

or go the pansy route and try tarmac!

personally i would fibreglass the deck to seal it then mix some gel coat with desired pigment with kiln dried sand and apply it with a brush. it is important to use kiln dried sand as it holds no moisture nad the resin will really get a hold of it.

As Mark and luckylady say, the fibreglass route is the way I would also suggest, I have always used North East Composites, they used to be next to Caleys down North Shields fish quay, and are now now based in Cramlington, they are really helpful and supplied me with coloured flo-coat,(Coloured Fibreglass resin and hardener) and a grit like substance that you sprinkle upon it while its drying, you can have any colour you like, I opted for light grey, it drys like plastic but coupled with the grit feels really safe under foot even when the deck is wet and covered in fish scales.

Fibre glass and flo coat is deffinatly the way to go, easy to install and will stand the test of time, also the good thing about going down this route is that, you can seal the whole deck with smooth ( with out the added bits ), when hardened mask off the areas you want non slip, abrade these area's, clean with acetone and recover....it will bond as one and looks a lot better than covering the entire floor section
