Boat Fishing - Rigs

Would firstly like to thank those of you contributed to my 'Boat Reel' thread and although I have not bought one yet - I have it down between 2 or 3 suggested.

I am now moving onto the type of Rigs needed for Boat fishing and specifically the various types to choose from -

Pirks ?
Muppets ?
Lures ?
Plugs ?

together with the best weights to buy ?

Thanks in advance.

suspect you'll see the word 'orange' popping up quite a bit here!

a lot of people have their preferred method, but for me, as far as lures go, good old daylights take some beating, hokkais maybe a close second

I like Norwegian pirks, (mainly cos I've got a mold for them) powder coated orange or silver. a muppet fished above a pirk can be tremendous

weights depends on what rod I'm using, how much drift/tide I have to compete with, I guess 8oz, and 12 oz being my mainstays

other bits n bobs are redgills in red black or orange when I'm after pollack in scotland

I guess go armed with a selection and don't be shy of switching stuff about till you find whats taking the fish's fancy

Might be worth trying a flowing trace (6/0) with crab early season inshore and a flowing a trace with fresh macky over the wrecks when the turn up.

Out on the boat (weather permitting) 16th March 2008 for the first time.

So would it be easier if I ask if you were in my position what would you take ?

Bearing in mind I have no experience of this at all :eek:and alot of the fishing terms take some research can you spell it out in easy terms :D

and also in anticipation that Im not spewing my guts overboard all day long :D

For March i would say you will be fishing close in as the wrecks dont fish that well on the drift until May (my opinion) and charters dont hold about wrecks.

I would say you will hit rough ground or sand banks, since the water at this time of eyar will be coloured i would use flowing traces loaded up with as much squid, mackerel crab or worm bait as you can get on.

Daylights with bait will also work, trick is really since the water will be coloured the fish will not so much hunt via sight as they do in the summer months but more by the smell.

Always worth trying the odd twin tail or pirk but not my choice until May. Lots of bait and regular lifts...worst comes to worst take some spare tackle i.e hooks line and if what your using is not working take a look around and spend 10mins making a rig up ont eh boat.

Had some good April trips up craster and Souter but also some blanks. If you end up over sand banks whiting and flatfish will be in good numbers, smaller hooks 1/0-2/0 with rag or mackerel works well, if cod show up hooks etc

Good luck

Flowing Trace - simple rig

Use this as a design for your flowing trace and you can't go wrong...

50/60lb Line used to make trace

Either pennel 6/0 or you could also try using Shads, Leadheads or Redgills

You mentioned one of the most important things yourself, sea sickness. Make sure you take something before you go out, I used to use Sea Legs but some say they make them drowsy. Also a few sandwiches always help and a drink of something you enjoy. It is no good having all the gear if you are hanging over the side of the boat shouting of Hughie all day :o :D :D :D not nice at all. I have never ever felt worse mate.

Jim.

Ginger biscuits have been mentioned in the past as a canny sea sickness remedy.

Waterproofs are another must, nowt worse than being sea sick and soaking wet. If the spray is coming over the boat when it's moving don't be shy in taking cover in the wheelhouse.

Try & avoid standing next to the engine exhaust, the fumes make some people sea sick.

Always point fish bums away from your face :D

10 pints of guiness the night before and a nice fried breakfast. Worked ok for me in Ireland a couple of years ago! Got some advice a few years ago, pick a point on land and when you feel a bit unsteady fix your gaze on that. Easier said than done when the waves are higher than the land!

Hello mate i just got back to boat fishing last year.
You really need to take some sea sickness tablets before you go out. I bought some Stugeron from the chemists for a couple of quid.(take two, two hours before you go and one every 6 hours after). They basically numb your balance in your ears.
Half the time i,m ok then the other time if its rough i spew.
I have never let it stop me fishing. Worse thing you can do is go below. Much better in the fresh air.
As to lures and baitI take jiggers with me and muppets and hockeyes.
You can go mad on buying gear but you don,t really need to.
Next time out for me will probs be from Whitby on the 22/06/2008. I have booked up on a boat with some other lads from wsf forum.
Hopefully i will have some sunshine and fresh macky as bait-caught on my own daylights. Might also buy some blue shads. (little fish made out of rubber with hooks in them).
Have a good day when you go out and let us know how you get on..

Mick

i myself used to use kwells from pharmasists
around £2/3 for a box of 12/20 cant remember
take one an hour before you set out to sea
they can make you feel a bit queasy but a few seconds after you should be ok

sea sickness can get a hold of old sea legs too lol
my dads worked the boats for years yet last year he had a bit of a spew lol ground baiting
lol dont be scared to spew up on a charter just blame the drink the night before lol
have fun and main thing is dont think about it
once your on the boat and heading out you will be fine
think of all the fish your gona catch not ohhh my god i might spew up lol

positive thinking
then you will be fine
hope your trip goes well
