When does the boat season start i know you can go out uptiding now but i mean drift fishing the grounds/wreaks cheers

It starts in March but May being the real start with mackerel, cod ling etc.

Some years have shown good numbers In Jan and Feb from rough ground north of the Tyne but for me Mid May to 2nd week in Oct is the boat season.

I always class the easter holidays as the full on start of the season, although I do go out several weeks before if the weather is good enough ..... sometimes catch sometimes not.

norm

Inshore fishing as the guys have already stated

But offshore well there is a real difference as if you get on them its all year around

As for the boat season, i try to fish all year round, (due to the price we pay) but much prefer the summer.

On a good day weatherwise, do you think if you went out say 10 miles the fish would still take jiggers, hokkai's etc, if the clarity of the water was ok. I've read the reports from Whitby and they seem to do ok off the 10 mile wrecks.

It seems that during the winter all the smaller local boats don't seem to entertain the wrecks, i was wondering what the more experienced boat owners think ?

Boats further south seem to do better in winter, lots have tried and failed in the winter months 8mile plus off our port and had very very little, always be the odd day but Roll on mid March..should have 200 crab, 50 mackerel and boxes of squid to tempt them out the rocks and kelp...if not the crabs will have a nice spring meal.

I seem to remember makerel were caught around the 4mile mark in April, so if they are here again, the sprats will be as well, and all fish feed on them. Hope the sea warms up quick though. That would help.

Dont mention peeler Richy, lost all mine when the freezer in the garage packed up, there was some on Adtrader for £90 a 100, could'nt believe the price they're wanting..

Quick question,if Iwas to get a trip up for end of Jan,beggining of Feb what would I expect.
I've never fished off the boats at this time of year.Just fancy a trip out.,try my new braid,as I've never used braid .

Small, blue balls?
The Whitby lads seem to do OK at this time of year, taking cod and even a few pollock from the deeper wrecks.

When i said offshore i was really talking 25+ miles out

the guys further south that do well are either well inshore or are travelling great distances

sometimes they go north and travelling 25+ miles north they are due east of your port
