Looking to get a new boat rod and wondering what peoples preference is. I have a Slosh 30 reel and wonder if this would be ok to use with a balanced rod?

Also do people favour mono or braid these days and what sort of poundage are people using?

Finla question what range of pirks do people normally carry? Presume it is current dependant but wondering what is the norm.

cheers

It`s a common question Stuey,
Same stock answer ... Braid... dynon 3000 , 55lb, on a lever drag reel (penn or shimano, I use penn 245 & penn 225) attached to an uglystick rod ,,,,,, circa class 20lbd .

seems the standard with the boat lads, since its so thin in comparisson to mono then its not viewed as heavy.

braid is more suceptable to abrasion than mono filament so if you use a lighter breaking strain than 55lbd then it tends to cut easily on the rough ground / wreck. Of course this could be avoided by using a mono leader and so keeping the braid away from the rocks but I (and many more) favour not to use a mono leader, I suspect this is as its just more work to add a new trace when you get a snag.

Hi everyone,
I also have this same question, I bought a slosh 30 for beach fishing and as yet all i do is bird nests would this reel be adequate for boat fishing i know it has a great retreive but would it be good enough for general boat fishing if loaded with 50lbs braid ?
many thanks

55lb is for girls!,
got 80lb braid on one of my reels, when that snags I just leave it snagged and fish another road, greta for slowing the drift down.... to a dead stop!

If ya nesting all the time with ya sl30sh,have you put the brake blocks in mate? II know it seems a silly question but a lot of people think they are fitted from new when they are not

new boat\'s nearly a ton heavier, so might have to go upto a daiwa SLT80W (1070 yards of 140lb braid :P )

either that or this year I\'ll be mostly fishing with the winch off me trailer!

Slosh 30 `s in my oppinion are no good for boat fishing as the retrieve is a little on the quick side ! may be ok if your just hunting littleuns though ! ;) ;)

Agree with Bert, I\'ve got the bigger 50 version which gutless with anything over 2lb on but handy for fast running fish like tope when they head towards the boat and you need to get line back quick

Braid without a doubt. I\'m using 32lb Ultima Dynaflex Micro and found it superb.

My current rod is a Maximus C boat rod. Very flexible and gives great sport. For heavy duty work you cant go past the Shimano Beastmaster
