Looking for some help lads what breaking strain mono backing do you use?and do you use a braid or mono shockleader?any help wud be great

Hi Phil, I've got braid on my Saltist 20 and my 525. Mono backing is just the .35mm line that was on the reels to start with, I stripped the line back until I was putting about 150 yards of braid on (even on a good day I'm unlikely to cast either of those reels anywhere near that). Braid is so expensive so you don't want to be putting more on the spool than you need to. Just join the two with a double uni-knot.

Some lads do without a leader but I stick with a 70 or 80lb mono leader, I use a Bimini in the braid and a Yucatan to connect. This needs to be retied every few trips as the Yuctan will come loose as the tag end goes through the rings but it is pretty much the strongest braid to nylon knot going otherwise.

Other things are make sure you use a round profile braid like power pro or some of the cheapy spectra braids from China. Don't get greedy on the diameters - stick with what a decent mono would be so .35mm (66lb power pro) maybe down to .28mm (about 50lb).

Also remember there are wins and losses with braid. Big wins are bite detection and feel - both are superb. You can also pull out of lots of snags and especially tackle snags due to the high breaking strain. Losses are the rod will bounce around like crazy in a half decent sea due to lack of stretch, you also need to go steady if you get a decent fish or you risk riving the hook out.

On balance I love my braid set up but I still have reels with mono for when it suits the conditions better.
