Are most people switching to braided mainline for cod fishing into mixed/rough stuff this winter?
I still like the easiness of mono but am tempted by the better bite detection of braid.. So bloody expensive though..........
Don't get your finger in the way of a loop if things go pear shaped while casting. I nearly lost a finger end doing that.
However, I guess the same can be said of mono too. A 6oz lead pulling out mono still carries just the same sort of momentum as it does to braid.
What I do find with braid is if you do birds nest, it's a lot easier to sort out.
Mono stretches into itself so tightly that it's a lost cause more often than not. Braid doesn't stretch so loops my be tight but not such a huge problem.
I recommend taking a map pin in your tackle box to pick the loops free.
I sorted the birds nest problem a lot easier though. I switched to a FS reel. No more lost nights fishing now due to a complete mess on my reel.
Something I find now though, is that with braid being a lot thinner you need to buy good quality gemini clips with the eye tight in to the shank. The ones I bought in bulk aren't close in and I used to lose the lot with the braid slipping out. You generally can't bend the eye in any more as it's stainless steel, so just give it a quick glow on the gas burner and it softens it up so you can close the gap right up.
I'm a bit allergic to Fixed Spool reels but want to get over it.
On a budget of £200 for the lot, what would people recommend as a good FS Reel/Rod set-up for winter cod fishing into gnarly ground?
Also, would using an FS on a rod rung for multiplier - like my Grey's Nitra - be ok??
Thanks for any help...

Spectre braid from China on flea bay is lovely stuff. Only £7 - £10 a spool. Used it for ages now on fixed spool beach outfit and also on my boat reels.
I cant work out the issue with fs on multi rung rods mate, I am total FS convert now and I have had no issues with any of my rods which are almost all multi rung.

It's okay mick but I find it to thick on certain diameters and defeats the object of using braid compared to whiplash ect.shockleader is ok -50 at 90lb
