Braid

What strength braid would you reccomend I use?

Got the chinese spectra in either 50 or 80.. I'd rather use the 50 if its enough..

Using a 12/20 with abu 7000

Also how much would you put on? Half a spool then backing?

I use 50lb braid and 40lb mono traces that break without losing half the braid as well. Put some mono backing onto the reel to stop the braid slipping, then load on as much braid as you can. Over time, you'll lose some of the braid so you want plenty left to still reach the bottom and not just replace 100yrds at a time.

I'm sure you will get different views but my set up on my shadding gear is 50lb braid, no mono leader straight to swivel then a 4ft length of 40lb mono with a running ledger, another swivel then a 3ft length of 30lb mono to your shad/twin tail. Personally I fill the spool about 3/4 with 20lb mono and the last 1/4 braid, the deeper the braid the more chance of it digging in on itself, having said that most of my fishing is in less than 100ft of water, you may need more if you are fishing a lot deeper.

Cheers mate.. Do you use a rubbing leader? If so what length and what minimum b/s?

No rubbing leader, just 50lb braid straight through to a Gemini clip. I’ve a set of traces ready tied with 40lb mono tied to a swivel then 30lb mono to bottom hook and 30lb to sinker. Clip the trace on and away you go.
Make or buy your traces with a hard nylon or copolymer that will stand up to abrasion better than the soft stuff.

One thing to watch with braid is not to pull it out of a snag by hand, find something to wrap it around otherwise it will slice into your hand.

Yeah i have a nice hefty bit of shovel shank for that thanks

if you do that it sometimes snaps where it is wrapped around the piece of wood.
I would just point the rod into the wreck/snag until your trace snaps.
I use 80lb straight through and me traces always snap first, never lost any braid yet.
