On my new reel Penn affinity There is a braid spool, what size braid should I use for longer casting as I've never fished with braid before? And should I have a backing line of mono? Thanks lads

if your bait fishing 40lb spectra off ebay will do the job and you dont need to put any backing on if its a braid spool

look at the diameter of the mono you would use and get the same diameter braid i have used braid for 7 years now and now that braid is getting thinner i find this the best way to decide i have just seen it is a fixed spool you have so you can get away with a thinner one

does this stuff not slice your finger off when casting? I use it for spinning but wouldnt dream of chucking a 5oz weight with it on an fs.

I've had braid slip on my salmon reel so i now use about 10 - 15 yrds of backing to get a good grip on the spool, also there's not much point in having 300yds of braid on a large reel if you use some backing you'll get a couple of fills off a 300yd spool

The braid spool does not hold a lot as its so shallow and you dont want to fill it level like mono as you will get bunches pulling off.I got 230 yards of Spidercable ez braid on mine ,its 30lb but is thinner than the 20lb I got from china. You wont need mono backing as there are a couple of holes in the spool to atach the braid through so it can`t slip around the spool.

So maybe have 30lb all the way through but don't overfill it?
