Hi, I am a relative newcomer to sea fishing after coarse fishing for many years.

Booked a weeks holiday up at Brighouse Bay, staying in a little cottage near enough right on the beach near the town of Borgue. We will be there 14th to 21st May.

I think where we are staying is just to the west of the main bay where there is another smaller bay.

It would be great to do some fishing while I am up there. If anyone could advice me on marks, bait and methods I would be very grateful.

Also any idea what I might hope to catch ?

Many thanks.

Hi welcome to the site
I've stayed at brighouse bay many times and have always fished well up there
Take with you lots of weights rigs spare line and plenty of bait
Ground is really rough , stay on the lower area of the site past the tents and follow the track down to the wooden chalets and go through the woods stick to the path along by the golf course by the sea and you can fish from any of the rocks but like I said ground is heavy lots of pollock wrasse and dogfish bull huss and some red cod.
Goin up that way my self on friday so hope you have a good time away
Tight lines
David

Welcome to the site. I have my caravan up there on that site and will be there at the backend of may. The directions that David has given are spot on. If you arent scared of a good hike follow the path/walkway all the way to the end so you are right at the end of the golfcourse and there is a big flat rock located on the side of a good deep gulley which is good for wrasse and pollack off the float using lug as bait.

If you want some good fishing you can try the Manx Rock it gives some good fishing also you can try the rock marks along the front of the golf club, its not to bad walk.if you fancy a ride out you can go to the Ilse of Withorn its another good days fishing off the rock marks.Ross bay is not that good.

Good fishing,

hello mate,
fished a canny bit round there.Borgue has always been a better shot than anywhere round that area. Burrow head is also a good shout. As the lads said, fish the float or spin for pollack and wrasse, probs a bit early in the year for big bags. Doggies come on well in the fading light. Also an outside chance of a bass from further into luce bay.
macky and rag is probably all i'd take.
hope this helps a bit, mark.
ps kirkcudbright chinese is canny

Thanks for the advice lads. I am not staying on the site but in a cottage a bit further along, but I guess I can still follow the same path down to the rocks along the golf course.

A few questions:

How would I find Manx rock ?

Never float fished from rocks before, do I plumb the depth and fish close to bottom or just suspend a bait at an arbitary depth ?

Would it be worth bottom fishing as well or is the ground too rough for that ? We seem to be staying just at the top of the beach so I was going to have an hour here and there just putting a bait out on a beachcaster and see what comes along. Or is the ground just too rough for that ?

Would mackeral strips be ok for bait or should I take some rag and lug with me ?

Many thanks again for all the help, really lookin forward to it.

The ground is never to rogh to be fished fishing on the bottom can be very productive up there for wrasse dogfish occasional codling

Try fishing a sand eel on a float with the trace set about 8-10 feet don't have to cast far tho you will find deep water right at your feet with fish holding close to the edges

Take some toby spinners and a light spinning rod catching pollock on that sort of gear is very exciting
Crab rag squid macky are all good baits , head to the bach and along the right hand side there is loads of rocks and rock pools you will pick loads of peeling crabs I always have

Drop a message if your not to sure matey

Many thanks

For all the help lads, we are going next week and I will certainly let you know how I get on.

One thing, are there any bait shops in the area ?

Hello Magpies, there is a bait and tackle shop in Castle Douglas, halfway up the high street on the left hand side called Cowans, only 15 minutes away from Brighouse heading towards Dumfries. There is also another bait and tackle shop in Newton Stewart at the top end of the village. At the roundabout on the A75, Newton Stewart is the 3rd exit. Travel down past the garage on your left, shop 100 yards past it on left hand side.

Hi mate.

Just out of coincidence, I'm goin up there myself too, from 3rd of june till 6th June. I've only fished whithorn and st Abbs in Scotland, so this will be a change for me. Bigger fish and plenty of them, meaning plenty sport, hopefully....!:D

I'll be mainly targeting smoothhounds, thornbacks, bass and possibly tope.

Been to both these tackle shops wouldn't recommend the one in Castle Douglas very expensive and didnt sell much bait, well, no live bait anyway when i was there. just take lots of wieghts and bait so you wont need to buy anything over there. The other tackle shop in Newton Stewart is canny though, help full owner and good range of bait, got some great ragworm from there which the wrasse went mad for but it's further away.

Thanks again lads

Thanks again lads

Just loading the car up now. I have some really good fresh rag, a dozen big frozen crab and a box of squid for starters. Cant wait to get going to be honest.

Will there be any mackerel about or is it too early ?

Best of luck with the fishing. This time next week i should be just pulling on to the site for our well earned break. Mrs has her wine and books already sorted out , i just have to sort out what fishing gear i'm taking. Both sea and course may be the wisest move.

Catch report

Catch report

Had an enjoyable week. Plenty of flounder and a decent plaice from the estuary plus doggies and a few small pollack from the southpark rocks. Frozen squid probably best bait all in all for the dogfish. Many thanks again for all the help.
