buying a boat help

Isnt the evinrude ETEC a two stroke , the TOHATSU dfi is a two stroke as well , the OPTIMAXX is also two stroke

the modern direct injection two strokes are very good and in somecases are far far cheaper to run and own compared to a 4stroke, it will take a lot of research to see what fits but for me it was the money saved in service costs why i went for a direct injection two stroke

Sean

the arguments for/against 2 strokes will rattle on forever, as i've seen on various forums...

service costs on the ETEC are over greater periods, but i like my engine serviced before every season...so i know its spot on.

am lost lol but i would want a service before i started using it regular but like i say i will be only on the hard ground around the coast up to the graveyard and down to hendon so not far really

Easy fish you are right about the arguments and there is still no proof that either is right or wrong, I have my engine checked over each year at a cost of £50 so not bad really

but as the op is buying second hand then he has a vast array of choice but he does not have to discount the two stroke as the modern ones are ultra reliable and as good on fuel as the modern 4 strokes

sean

i didn't recomend he discount the 2 strokes...

all new engines have their merits, thats what i wanted to suggest,

the newer the better...

both boats i've had, i've renewed the engines, the latest one in late 2009 £7000 for mariner 80 EFI..

what i'm saying is, buy as new as you can as we all know boats are an expensive hobby..

Sorry Sean i disagree, i had a 75hp Optimax on my Reiver 60hrs and 4 years old and it was thirsty, plus i always had a niggle in the back of my mind about 2 stroke lube pumps, people used to say always put 2 stroke in the tank as well "Just in case" ??
I know it is a personal choice and depends on the budget available, but i would go 4 stroke....:)

I may agree with you on the Optimax as they can be a nightmare untill propped 100% right and to prop one totally right can cost a fortune, one of the guys on wsf has done it.

I remember buying my first motorbike with an autolube and all my mates told me to get the blockoff kit and put the oil in the tank, i seem to think this is where them rumours come from, as i had a guy tell me to ditch the oil tank on a brand new ETEC and put it in the fuel, but that is how these modern two strokes work so more efficiently as they only deliver what is needed at any one time

Like you say it is personel choice but two strokes are still made and will be made for years to come. for me its the price and savings which got me onto them

Hi Sean, I thought that 2 strokes were still available new in the UK from old stock, but new ones were not being imported anymore....

The Evinrude ETEC is a two stroke, the tohatsu TLDI is a two stroke and of course the Optimax

all are fully available as they all come well under the emissions regulations,

the stuff you are on about is the old carbed two strokes which were so bad we had been using them since outboards were invented well i belive that is 60+years and they were that bad lol lol

the main reason the new ones will survive is they have the get up and go of the two stroke and some of them are as fuel efficient and as quiet, with them being direct injection you cannot remove the oil system and add it to the tank and that intern was the problem as the old engines, these were not consistent with people adding there own as it could be anything near to the mixture or well over an extra bit for safety lol lol

Thanks for that Sean, good bit of info...:);)

so 2 stoke or 4 stroke?lol will read up on them both

This will depend on many factors, you may get a brilliant boat but it may have an old two stroke engine on it now if you got that you may then in a years time upgrade the engine and have the best of everything. you may get an old boat but it has a high tech moden 2/4 stroke engine on it,

I would find the boat that suits what you want then find the one with the best engine on it for your budget enjoy it then if the engine is not quite right you can upgrade later

a typical 90hp etec will set you back 6k a 100 4 stroke mariner will set you back about 7k

a 100hp yammy 4 stroke will cost you 10k

so it will all become dependant on the package.

Sean

10 k for a engine wow so am i asking to much to start up with 12k?

I think you will get a great package for your budget, but you will have to travel to get the best deal.

The south coast will have far more choice and of course they will be cheaper than up north, decide where you are going to keep it and on how many will use it and you will be almost half way there,

A good 16.5ft boat like an alaska, warrior 165, seahog, raider, will fish 3 at a push but will be great with 2 on , the reiver sportsman will fish 3 , so there are plenty out there but if you really want to fish 4 then you will need a bigger boat

i would choose what you want to do then come back say what you want then take ideas from people who have already been through what you are now doing
