Hi, I've been playing about with a Century Carbon Metal Crest, didn't see a bad word said about them on the net, particularly for rough ground. Most comments were that they were really stiff in the tip and a powerhouse great for hauling. Now I was having a few casts with a friends new on and also his Tip Tornado Sport and the sport seemed a lot stiffer in the the tip than the crest. I didn't really get to fish with them so maybe the crests power comes to light there. Wondered if anyone had any experience with this?

i would go along with what you say, i bought one second hand mint condition just did,nt like it not that there is anything wrong except i was expecting a bit stiffer.
obviuosly a very nice rod and can imagine a lot of people liking them but just my type of rod.
still rate it a very nice rod though.
also i have a tt sport new version and find it stiffer all round than the crest imho

For a while all century rods had a tendancy to go soft.. the ones from around 2000 - 2005
I had a Tip Tornado Sport that became as soft as steven hawkins chopper.. reduced to absolute ruin and useless with prolonged use. Which is what made me stop using them (i was only ever a century man.. loved the rods from 90s like the Grand Slam, F40 and Vectra - but on my return to fishing.. and seeing so many good expensive rods going soft - thats when i jumped to Zziplex / Shimano and found them a better bit of kit)
Heard a lot of rods from the century stable that done the same...
but apprently the new autoclaving has solved that.. as Century did put there hands up and admit it, and addressed the problem
so if your rod has Autoclav on it, it will be fine.
But i do know the mark 2 CMC (the one with metal bands on) is softer than the Mark 1 CMC, but that is by design.
I back to giving century another go.. and have recently had a mark 1 CMC (total scaffold pole!) and have a Kompressor SS - Both very good performing rods, but have a bit of a "dense" feel with the carbon century now use...

I've used my friends cm crest and it seems to me that the butt sectoin is soild, the mid section is stiff but the the tip section is stiffer. As most century rods now are uilt on a 'gearbox design' it works with you to cast those distances you need, as me mate Geordie G will agree.

Rod i have swapped it to member Redcar above for a Kompressor SS, and I find the SS is a much much softer and more progressive rod!
The CMC had a poker of a stiff tip with a softer middle section.. A bit of a strange action i thought.. still a nice performing rod which impressed me though, sufficent enough to give Century rods another chance.
where as i find the SS bends a lot more all round and is softer, with a more sensitive tip, but allows me to "wind it up" a lot lot more than the CMC.
Only reason i got rid of the CMC was i found it a bit overkill on the stiffness in the tip, and for the type of heavy fishing i do (30lb line pennel pulleys off rocks 6 ounce all the way) a SS is more than enough beef, but still very very usable, where as the CMC was that stiff, it gave me a bad back if i gave it hell all day with huge casts.

I've got my hands on one and now have had the chance to get it out for a wee sesh and I really can't understand why everyone thinks it's so stiff in the tip, how on earth can people say it is poker stiff, it simply isn't. I'm not really qualified to compare it to other Centurys, maybe it is stiff for them and I was just expecting more. It is a braw rod to use though, really light and user friendly with lots of 'feel'.

Hi Rossco the Carbon Metal Express works very well with a fixed spool. The Crest is essentially an uprated CME so it should do the job.
