hi my mate at work told me that braid is great fishing with from the shore ?? is this right ??? does any1 use braid from the shore ??? is it ok to cast with ??? ive only ever used mono to cast with and braid on the boat

I tried braid once and it cast ok for a few casts, then i got slack coils and a knot that was impossible to get out . So i went back to mono. Plus if you are fishing rough ground it frays on the rocks. Can work out expensive...:(

Braid is EXCELLENT for casting, but only for fixed spool reels. I use it on a small fixed spool reel in the summer for spinning, but I have used it with good results for bottom fishing for bass from beaches. The good points about braid is the very high breaking strain ratio to the very low diameter of the line. Also there is no stretch in the line, so contact with bites is imediate.
However, there are a couple of points to remember to get the best results :
Fixed spool reel only (if using it for casting) ; fine on a multiplier for boat fishing.
Don't fill the spool as full as you would with mono..slack loops will result in knots, which are IMPOSIBLE to untangle.
Don't use in very windy conditions.....especialy a side wind.
Don't strike too hard on a 'bite' remember there is no stretch, so you don't want to pull the hook out.
Also I always steep the spool in warm water to remove all the salt from it after a fishing sesion. As someone has pointed out it is very expensive, but if you follow the above points it will last you for a few seasons.
Good luck

used braid for last 2 years for beach fishing, I use a 16ft soft action rod and fixed spool reel
and havent had any problems once I got used to it.. You have to use different knots and must use a finger stall when casting even when lobbing short distances.
took me a while to get used to using a fixed spool as I prefer multipliers. braid is expensive but mine has lasted 2years. Baza gives good advice in the thread above.
For what its worth my advice is to stick with mono, its a lot of hassle for very little gain.

CHEERS FOR ALL THE ADVICE LADS THINK AL JUST STICK WITH THE MONO IVE BOUGHT THE BRAID ALREADY:mad: BUT AL WRAP IT UP FOR MY SONS FIXED SPOOL FOR XMAS ;)

braid can be a nightmare ...i use it in the summer but not the winter ....good for spinning etc can be too much info when bottom fishing ...its exxageratesknocks. into thinking you have a lunker on the hook end....when its only a lil dab .....

Hi mate I think you are getting some bad advice off people that don’t know much on this subject I have been using braid on my penn 525 535 and my Abu 7500 for the last 6 seasons and have had less trouble than I ever did using mono if you use to thin a line then you can have some bother I use 65lb which is about the same as 20lb mono I can cast my 525 over 140yds with just a lead. I have found my fish loss rate over heavy ground is much less as you can bully fish out of snags without snapping your maine line over the past 3 seasons I have used the same line and have never snapped my Maine line when snagged and I 2 hook most of the time the bite detection is superb you have to get used to not striking as hard as with mono I just lift into the fish and wind so I would say to you give it a try
ps i have never had a problem with damage to braid just try to cut it and you will see why

thanks codman the braid i bought is 75lb says diam of 22lb mono i love the bite detection i get from my braid i use on the boat cheers man n all the best

been using braid on multis for years, most of it at 20/25lbs bs, never had a problem, there are a few things

dont wrap it around you hand to pull out of a snag, it will cut in like you wont believe, think cheese wire

if you get a nest it will be a bad one, if in your normal casting a nest happens fairly often dont use braid

because of the lack of stretch i find it less usefull in rough seas as the wieght shifts because of the lack of stretch mono gives

as codman says dont strike into a bite

1lb whiting give knocks like double figure cod :D:D:D

I don,t think its bad advice just different experiences using braid. Used it for 2 years and after initial problems never had any problems on rocks, beach etc. and now hooked on the stuff for shore use. Interesting your comments on using multipliers to cast with as I was told by Sea Angler, Tackle Shop and numerous anglers that I had to use a fixed spool. Braid is too expensive to experiment with, but when I have to change line I'll put it on a multiplier and give it a whirl. I have 3 multipliers lying unused which I would rather use.
I use 80 pound braid which has same diameter as 12 pound mono.

does the braid not damage rod rings on beach casters?

might give braid a go for snaggy deep marks where distance is not important.

i have seen a few big comps won with lads using braid

I have used braid on multipliers and it was great until you get a nest.....big problems sorting it out. I then bought a large fixed spool but the line lay was crap which allowed loose loops of line to gather and then knot up after 3 or 4 casts. The moral of my story is if you use a fixed spool make sure you get a one that has a good line lay for braid (mine is fine with mono though !). Look at the reviews when thinking of purchasing.
