I have been practicing my casting. I have a century Tip Tornado Match and a slosh 20 loaded with 18lb sensor and a tapered leader. I was fishing with the reel down, but have tried it up and getting a bit further. I am currently laying the lead behind me and managing to get 135yds. Will this be about my limit with this setup and casting style or should I be able to get a bit further? I know if you pedulum cast you have reel down other than that is it just personal preference whether you have it up/down?

i cast off the ground aswell with reel down,, i have had my cast measured at 200 yaurds,i was told off a casting teatcher to have reel arm right up and your tip as close to the ground as you can, with your body at twist that you feel ok with ,and keeping your lead at a 90 % angle on the ground behind you, still keeping your tip right down and reel arm up,, let me know how you get on ,, alreet good luck mate.......

i use a slosh 20 15lb stren @ 70lb shocker and a greys mercury and i can put a plain lead near the 16o yrd mark and a baited trace maybe 145/150 yrds,but have no brakes in though,but iam up grading my rod in march cause also my set up is limited and time for a up grade.. but i had a casting lesson with a instructer and had a few casts with his ttr raptor and hit 197 yrds . as iwas a bit rusty but back in the swing now ready for the cod season

If you're putting a plain lead 160yards you're not putting a baited trace 150!
...Normaly people minus 40-50yards for bait esp with crab. Single worm clip downs go alot further than crab...

Well said mate - I've done just shy of the 250 on the field but would guess in good conditions on the beach if I catch it spot on I'm maybe putting a bait out 150 yards. Knock another 20 yards off for a sloping beach and real fishing conditions especially given that a safe fishing pendulum cast is very very different to how I would cast on the field.
Tony the set-up you have is capable of well over 200 yards over grass, especially the rod. The problem with the Slosh is once you started hitting it really hard the reel will become much more difficult to control especially early in the cast. Strange as it may seem this will mean you need more braking and not less to cast further.
As for reel up or reel down in the end it is a matter of personal preference. Putting the reel down slows the cast down making it a bit easier to time but always remember Paul Kerry cast a 12' rod with the reel up 296 yards back in the day.
As Sean says get yourself a couple of lessons, I always say casting lessons were one of the best investments I ever made in my fishing. You don't always have to belt it but its nice to be able to if needed

set up could achieve bigger distances but 135 yds is still ok.
use and do what you are comfortable with reel down pendulum casting slows cast down reel up speeds everything up timing more criticle.
a lad from up here i used to fish with and a hell of a chucker with bait started knocking about with me yrs ago harry barker who will tel you i started to use reel on bottom on account of it been more consistant only other people using reel on the bottom i knew of was the whitley bay lads tony taylor and his m8s and lew marsden. but look at it now majority use reel on bottom. do what you feel comfortable.distance is not as criticle as it was years ago on colliery beaches.

when i first started ishing dawdon blast about 40 yr ago there was a group of whitley bay anglers who use to fish the heap in front of pit actualy it was between heap and the long rock.everyweek i used to pass them ,they fished early morning on a sunday 6am till about noon. everyweek just about they had fish distance was the key this was got me hooked up to pendulum casting it was necessary to get fish. one of the blokes was tony taylor/ron barowiski /dalglish reels at the bottom penn squidder juniour reels .these lads could certainly put baits out power casting swinging the lead.
i have seen fished next to jim on seaham south pier when he was using reels on bottom of rod but when it was i dont no . jim as a bloke i certainly could,nt speak more highly of true gentleman and obviously a great angler he will of forgotton more than i will ever no about fishing.

Casting should be slow and effortless in a fishing situation...Lads who watch don't know where the distance comes from.
Its all to do with timing and technique, putting the lead in the right position and getting the tip low...then size takes over!

what do you rate most important thing in catching cod.
in no particular order do you think. rigs
been able to cast the furthest
knowing your marks
bait
having the time to virtualy live on the beach
having the best reel
having the best rod.

1) Knowing your marks - just look at Seanyrooroo's catches so far this season
2) Bait - next most important after above - look at the number of fish Jim Dobie lands - why? because he always has top class bait
Way behind these two in third place is rigs.
As for casting - it is a means to an end. Again look at Jim - he's not the biggest caster in the world but he probably catches more cod in a season than most of us will manage in a lifetime. But what casting does do is allow you to fish conditions that many anglers can't because they can't get a lead out past the first breaker to hold bottom. And fishing at range can mean catching fish when others blank. Useful yes - the be all and end all - no.

you can have the best bait in the world but if you bait is presnted wrong it wont catch .
jim dobie also has the know how of been in right place at the right time. bait is a big factor in catch rates and at times casting distance will., same as certain rigs. all imho

once you have the first weighed off to some degree then it becomes bait and rigs then distance
a lot of marks this side of the Tyne (North) do not require distance casting which is handy for the joe schmo normal angler as it puts the chance of a decent fish within their grasp
ideally I would also love ALL the time in the world to go on the beach figuring out the lay of the land but again most of us are workers and operate within set times
that's another beauty of fishing club matches as you have to try and eke out fish in situations and places that may not be ideal and are therefore learning all the time

If the fish aren't where you're puting your bait then u wont catch them!
....Doesn't matter how good your bait is!
...and at night it doesn't make a difference how far u chuck a bait as long as you are competent.
The other thing to remember is, that these 'Top anglers' when standing next to you can get a good pasting...doesn't matter If he has snake whites and the biggist crab u've ever seen! All to do with where the fish are feeding and having luck on yourside..
