The weather forecast was poor for today so fishing was written off. However, the sea looked very flat this morning so I decided to nip out and wet a line. There are definite signs that things are improving after last Fridays big blow and the bites were coming at regular intervals. I kept three decent Cod up to 4lb and return several "border line" keepers. All fish were caught on the rough ground off Seaton Sluice with green twintails tipped with prawn still doing the biz.

Nice1 Tony life in the sea again err, if the weather holds it is a 4 day fishing weekend for me so hope to find a few and the first mackerel of the year.

Hi Tony,
I met you in the loch at the Royal Quays when you were going out. My boat was the "Carol Ann". Pleased you got some cod. We targeted Plaice over South Shields beach. Ended up with three plaice (two about 1 lb, and one about 3/4 lb). we also caught a small codling and a couple of dabs. All the fish were caught on light spinning tackle. Best bait was lugworm and bluey strip. Slow going, nothing spectacular, but a very nice morning to be afloat.
Incidentally: Plaice don't half give a good account on light gear, and all fish returned to grow bigger.

I'm pleased you nailed a few and it goes to show that there's good sport to be had by simply removing our "Cod goggles".
We often talk about having a go at the Plaice but invariably we always end up going after the illusive biggun from the wrecks or rough ground. It's well known that there's some stonking Plaice about and I reckon it's about time we turned our attention to bagging a few because they put up a good fight on light gear and are actually very tasty. The same could be said of the Bass and when the conditions are right I'm sure we could drift or anchor outside the last breaker and fish into their feeding area. I'm saying all this but it's not easy to break the old habits and I just know I'll be straight out after the Cod at the first opportunity.
