Century rods ?

Hit the nail on the head the ss is a Excellent allrounder I use mine in the river for flats etc on the rocks for cod I even took it to norway where it was tested to the max with doubles and it handled it mint I really can't say enough good stuff about this rod its in a league of its own if your ever passing through seaham give me a pm and ill give you a go of it

Again, many thanks for the input, and for kingcod deano's very kind offer.

I'll try and pop into Lewis Tackle tomorrow lunchtime to discuss my requirements, now that you kind folks are narrowing down what to spend my money on

I confess to being a little concerned - I spoke with one tackle shop over the phone who suggested Sonik rather than Century and this was repeated when I visited another tackle shop this weekend.

That's not exactly what I was expecting (or hoping) to hear :(

As an aside, regarding the SL30SH that blew its guts out on me, I got it swapped out with a replacement unit at the shop where I bought it and the proprietor said he'd had "a fair few" returns that were of a similar nature on that model over the last few months, so it looks like mine is/was not an isolated incident.

The plot thickens...

Just out of interest mate, I was in Lewis's on friday & it looked like he'd just had a new delivery of Century rods - quite a few to look at!

Gary :)

Well, I went to Lewis Tackle today and found three dodgy looking characters in there ;) who, with the help of Simon, the owner, reassured me and persuaded me that Century was indeed the right way to go.

Simon offered me a great price on a pair of Century Kompressor Super Sport rods and I had a sneaky peaky at a couple of reels as well, starting with the Penn Fathom 15 (non levelwind) and ending with the Saltist.

Got what I felt was honest and considered advice from folks who actually use the rods in anger and I felt a lot easier with the products having spoken to real-world users.

Thanks a lot g-force for your (and your friends) advice this afternoon (and in this thread) which was very much appreciated.

I left to mull things over and I think I'll be picking up a pair of Century Kompressor Super Sports by the end of the week, possibly with a pair of Saltist reels to go with them, and I feel a lot easier now making an informed decision.

If things go that way I'll post some tackle porn pictures for everyone :D of the new rods and (maybe) reels and then get my rear in gear to go out and christen them both. Looks like I'll adopt a bullheaded "I'm not going home until I've caught a decent fish on both rods" attitude this coming weekend. Might turn into a long session...

The saga may roll over into next week if my job takes me overseas again this week, but watch this space...

Thanks again to everyone who offered information and helpful advice - very much appreciated from someone making a return to a sport that has changed an awful lot in the last 15 years.

To be continued...

The deed is done...

I called Simon at Lewis Tackle in Whitley Bay a short while ago and bought two Century Kompressor Super Sport rods.

This won’t be everyone’s cup of tea but I’m going to use them with Akios 757CS reels.

I bought an Akios 757CS a while ago on Ian Alexander’s advice and I love fishing the rough stuff with it. I can throw a decent distance with it if needed but it’s a great reel for grunt and torque and easy for lobbing casts into rough ground marks, which is what I will be mostly doing.

I was so impressed I bought another one, so two Century Kompressor Super Sport rods with an Akios 757CS on each one.

If I ever need serious distance I have Abu 6500 C3CT Mag High Speed reels, among others, and a mate of mine suggested keeping the SL30SH :( reels instead of selling them on - his rationale went along the lines of “whether you like them on not you can cast miles with them and you’ve already spent the money”. Fair point I suppose.

I will try to pick the rods up on Friday afternoon, if time allows, but they are bought and paid for and I have an interesting weekend ahead now...

Happy days :)
