I can't speak for the Sport, but i have the Supermatch LD, and it's a great rod. I think there's people who don't like it because of the thinness of it, but it suits my lady like hands.
Yeah, that's basically right - the sport is more of an all-round rod, the supermatch a bit more specialist. I had a mk1 version which was a really nice rod (reluctantly got sold a while back when I was a bit skint )
The supermatch has a much softer tip, about the last 3ft, and a stiffer butt than the sport. However both are very capable of chucking 6 or 7oz plus bait, but to get the best out of the supermatch you need to be able to wind it up properly - I think the sport will handle a wider range of casting styles better.
Haven't tried the newer models, but general consensus seems to be that the older models were better - don't know if that's just a bit of sentimentality though?
