Charter boat trip number two

Well after our first ever blank on a charter boat on Saturday out of Hartlepool........which was only marginally eased by the fact that the other 10 anglers caught precisely 1 fish between them, we got up at 0450 this morning for the drive to Sunderland, with a mixture of hope and trepidation.

Headed out at 0700 to be greeted by a bit of a breeze and a relatively small swell. However it was very much colder than Saturday. As on our previous trip the Skipper, tried wreck after wreck and loads of hard ground, doing his best for his anglers. However like Saturday the fish were nowhere to be found. Just because were are on our holidays, doesn't mean the fish should have gone on theirs too! To make matters worse the afternoon saw a steady fall of rain and before long I couldn't see through my glasses due to the water and the bait gunge on them. When I did eventually get them cleaned I realised the daylight was not half as grey as I had thought!

As the day went on and we got colder and colder we wondered............ why are we here?... ..............We could have had a week in Benidorm for the same money................On second thoughts, we are probably better off where we are!

Late in the afternoon, our new pal Chris, realising how many leads we had lost gave us three, along with the phone number of Dusty Bin. Thank you. I searched my decimated tackle box and gave him a couple of scaby shads, as some kind of pathetic "return the favour" gesture .

With an hour to go, a fellow angler, Graham pulled in a pouting, then a codling, and that was the sum total of the day's catch. Congrats Graham, just a pity we didn't have a sweep !

If it had been a long faces contest, Lynn and I would have been first equal!

On the way in my mind wandered and here are the depressing statistics I came up with.

19 hours fishing over two days :

Fish caught - zip, zero, nil, nada

Bait used - 4 boxes squid, 2 packets mackerel fillets, 3 packets joeys

Miles driven - 53 (not counting 183 from Scotland)

LOST - 17 leads

LOST - 16 rigs

LOST - 3 shads

LOST - 100 yards of line after a first drop bird's nest this moring

I am cold, I am wet, my feet hurt, my arms hurt, my shoulders hurt, my pride hurts even more!

Oh and I almost forgot, one more thing I LOST........The will to live!!

Off to google "Non physical, indoor hobbies for the over fifties!"

Cheerio.

Great report had a good chuckle at it. It's a shame there was no fish.

We are holed up at Crimdon Dene caravan park, are you near here mate? In dire need of buying some leads from you please. Off to Whitby on Thursday for some more NE water torture!

Didn't know that unl we got here, but holidays are dictated by school I'm afraid. I take it big tides are not conducive to boat fishing? Why is that?

What you find on a very big tide,If the wind and tide are together drift will be very fast not as bad if wind is against tide (not all the time),also stand better change of fish towards bottom tide or top of tide if a big tide, but saying that in the summer I have had plenty of cod on big tides,
also a lot of ppl just let the tide take line ,you should wind up and drop again (can be a pain if lots of lines out)sometimes if possible a little flick against tide gives you a better change
also if your fishing muppets daylights ect with bait keep moving) your bait now and again(let line out if nothing doing reel in check your bait)
Shad fishing you will be surprised how many ppl put a ripper daylights and a shad on ect the only way to fish a shad is single (sometimes hard work but they do come into there own when the fish are about and great sport on light rods)
hope this helps

Thanks for that. I did try the wind up and drop, but withh 11 lines out the tanglefish made a frequent visit to the boat. I was one of those people who have put a shad on under the lead with the daylites! lol. However I took notice of the disapproving looks and packed that in quick smart! Yeaterday I tried daylites, single hook with whole squid or mackerel fillet, single shad, single jelly and nothing worked. The two small fish that came to the boat, were taken inshore on squid and mussel cocktail.

Hoping Whitby is calm enough to get out.
