I quite enjoy a bit of trout fishing on the fly as well - makes a change from getting salt-lashed & sandblasted during the winter.

However, I'd rather get a pollock, wrasse, bass or even a humble mackerel on the fly - pound for pound there's no contest when it comes to a good scrap. I didn't get to do any salt-fly fishing last summer so am determined to get a bit more in this year. All I can say is if you enjoy your fluff-chucking, give it a go, especially if you're up the coast around Beadnell or Eyemouth, but there are plenty of marks more local that are worth a chuck too.

Of course, the next step is to head up to somewhere like the Derwent & chuck out 6oz and 3 lobworms full pendulum style on my beachcaster...................:D:D:D

It's as I stated before, many anglers view Summer shore fishing through rose-tinted specs.

1. The inedible wrasse has to be one of the easiest to catch fish in the sea (hence its appearance on every other Henry G. prog.)

2. It's now illegal to catch eels in inshore waters.

3. Lesser spotted dogfish are so easy to catch that my five year-old daughter won the sweep in the 70's with eleven fish AND not one of them put up any sort of scrap at all.

Bury your heeds in the sand if you must but divvent kid yersell that Summer shore fishing is owt more than good exercise on a sunny day.

Dont know what your talking about dorf simple as that. Like ya reply bout ya daughter in the 70's there was so many fish then anybody cud catch them, try match fishing these days mate. Wrasse an easy fish to catch wot about a stocked trout lol. Hey i like trout fishing but i dont give up the sea fishing because i cant take a codling home even though i caught almost as many codling last summer as i did in the winter and that was a canny amount before you say, wasnt far behind ivan with the cod count. Yes you are right about the eels but when targeting flounders you will catch eels which give good sport, everyone i know put them back anyways before the ban came in so no change there. Doggies dont fight lmao, try getting two on at a time, little stocked trout dont fight. Well im not getting into an arguement, people just need to give the summer shore fishing a try and also try different areas and not sit on the same marks they fish in the winter.
 
Used to fish the commericials (carp ponds) regular up until a couple of years ago BUT I always prefered the rivers catching Bream on the Tees, Dace on the Tyne etc...or the more natural still waters such as Whittle dene.

Last year fished the summer for Cod and it was poor IMO. Seas were always running when the matches were on and when it was perfect it was rock hard!

Theres been alot of fish caught early season this season, wether this bows well for the upcoming summer fishing I don't know but theres been nowt caught lately and TBH I've been out fishing twice I think since the last open on our coast.

I'm going to learn how to fish for flatties this year in the rivers to keep fishing, as well as go casting on the field to improve and get a new PB.
 
I used to switch over to the fly on our local stillwaters but it got too expensive at around £25 per day on the fly only waters.
I switched to the river a good few years ago in the hunt for the silver tourists (the king of fish), the Salmon.
It only costs me £165 per season for the permit & I can fish every day of the week if I wanted ;)

Mind you I still have the odd day trouting at Sweethope & Chatton.
 
I think you'll find that generally speaking it's the relative 'newcomers' to the sport who are determined to fish the shore marks throughout the Summer.

The more experienced shore-men have 'been there - done that' and realized after a few years that it's simply not worth the effort. So they hoy their rose-tinted specs away and get on with reality.

fishing is an addiction goto have my fix now and then but summer sport does keep me ticking over and maybe the odd new species turns up till winter arrives and the odd boat fishing if i can get out :D

what an absolute pile of crap. i fish the winter months and i fish the summer months, both different types of fishing but both just as good, infact with the summer fishing you carry less gear, its ( sometimes) warmer and most of the fishing is for a change done during daylight hours. i have had cod in may, june, july, aug and sept and some nice ones to. i have seen good catch reports on here during the summer. there are some cracking pollock and wrasse from up eyemouth and coldingham, pollock from seahouses, cod from seahouses and beadnell, cod, coalies from craster rock edges, macky from up at dunstanborough, west coast sea fishing, the list goes on. as far as reality goes i think you are the one who needs a check up.

Our club water at Waskerley offers five day tickets per day at a cost of just £10 per rod with a two fish bag limit (unlimited C&R until second fish is killed for fly anglers)

Fishing is from 6.00 am until one hour after sunset - real good value!

Although we stock it frequently with brown trout there is a natural head of wild fish which, although small, fight like crazy.

Might be worth a shot.

Agree with the rest of the lads,summer fishing can be just as good as winter if not better,,with a little traveling you can catch lots of species in one trip. :)
 
I am fond of wreck fishing in the summer. Like using the blus shads. Wind up 15 turns then drop down again-then you feel the knock.
 
Love the summer fishing me, starting to prefer it over my winter fishing, lots of hard fighting fish if your willing to do a little travelling, nowt better than chasing after your rod up the beach not knowing if its a personel best smoothhound or a pb bass. Black bream fishing is awesome too on the right tackle and theres conger too allthough these can be easier to seek out in the winter.

Ive only ever had 4 rays all thornbacks, so with a little help from some welsh friends i'm hoping to add a new ray to my species list this year.


Oh and i love a bit of wrassing too, a fish i seem to struggle to catch, not too fussed on the doggies either myself.

Targets these coming months a double figure spurdog, better my 7lb thorny, more conger, double figure hound, 5lb + bass, Bull huss, another type of ray and i would love to land a tope

Yes I agree the summer fishing is very good but you gotta travel to the best areas.
I keep my boat over in Maryport and travel over most w/e in the summer,I do a lot of plaice fishing from the shore there,s loads to catch and on light gear great sport and great eating as well.
If we get a bit of a south west gale I then head off round the solway to Scotland for the bass fishing in luce bay,cracking sport on light bass rod and small abu multiplier loaded with 8lb line,either plug fishing or bait fishing in the surf all you need is a fork to dig lug and a couple of rigs and weights in yr pocket.
I travel over to the Isle of Man each year mainly of the TT and grand prix motorbike racing and I normally sail my boat into Peel harbour for my stay.
Last year I got myself a little fold up motorbike that I can carry on board and I use this to travel to the point-of-ayre to fish for the tope off the shore.
I use normal winter beach gear with 100lb pullyrigs coupled with 6oz grippers because the tide race at the point is fast.
Now catching tope off the shore to me is the ultimate summer sport fishing they go like torpedoes and can strip yds off yr reel before you know it.
On my way back from the point-of-ayre if the conditions are right I go for the bass using plugs,again great sport and when baked in the oven are very nice to eat.
So all this summer fishing last year for me has been a lot better than this years winter cod fishing.
I am very lucky that I enjoy sea fishing both winter and summer but in the summer I sail my boat to Scotland,Ireland,and the Isle of man and I have my accommodation with me all the time so I can stop at whatever harbour I want and stop as long as I want.
So roll on the light nights and a bit sun on yr back,seems like its been a long cold winter this year to me.
