Cod Roe

Is there any way of telling if a cod is full of roe, i noticed yesterday when gutting 3 of the cod they were full of eggs, and looking at the egg sacks, me and Tel agreed that there must have been thousands of future cod going to waste. Such a shame really......Or am i just being a sentimental old fool.......

Nothing wrong with thinking of future fish stocks. Remember asking a similar question Why do Cod known to be full of roe get targeted?

i had the same on friday mate about 5 had roe in they were only 5lb or so aswell and the ling i caught was full of roe aswell its not a nice feeling when you find the fish has roe in it the big fish never had any roe in just a 2lb whiting

If there's a certain time when the Cod are spawning can't see why they cant have closed period to try and prevent so many Cod been taken full of roe.

The Ling I took yesterday was chock full of roe and I could tell straight away by it's belly IE it was ower fat for the shape of the rest of the fish...I was tempted to take the roe home for scran (times is hard) but was put off...

...have I been put off a delicacy?

as to the premise of the thread - no Chris you haven't been overly sentimental but as has been said a million times before the hook and line fisherman do only a fraction of the damage to future stocks to that of the netters so I wouldn't feel bad at all

Thanks for that lads i didnt sleep last night through feeling guilty.:D:D;)
When you look at the amount of eggs in there it must be tens of thousands, but i wonder how many actually survive to adulthood.

The guy on the boat next to me said it is a bit of a delicacy, apparently fried, but on looking at it it looks a bit like a pair of balls that have been skinned , so no chance of me trying it..:o

Or, if you squeeze around its annus, then it looks at you, in a funny sort of way;)
Give it a slap and reject immediatly:rolleyes::o:D:red:
