many moons ago a cod under 10lb was regarded as a codling, it looks now if anything above 4-5lb is called a cod

between 5 --8lb thats what ave been led to believe

I thought it was anything under 5lb was a codling but also heard it is because a cod needs to be about 5lb before it can spawn.

PMSL . Years ago when you could catch good size fish on most sessions, if you came off the beach passing "the big lads" with your couple of four pounders they would say "canny codling bonny lad". Now that we have good years and bad years, things are different. someone on here said, A cod is a cod, and i think from the compettitive side it is .

From the looks of the local fish and chip shops "Cod" and chips as advertised must mean fish of about 3lbd being called "cod" (or were they colin? fish)

BTW I always thought 7lbd ......

i was told when i was a kid (many moons ago ) that it had to be over 5lb i do think they should be over 2lb before there kept for the pan just my opinion
