from my verra ltd experience bait bait bait wat to use mackarel fresh if you can get :)then mussel squid prawn lug rag bluey owt you can lay your hands on:) feathers lures may still take coalies pollock etc where you fishing from:question:

You can if the water is clear and shads/pirks also work but once again clear water is needed. I dont winter fish from the boat as its just not my cup of tea but private and charter boats have both had some great report sin winter. In fact the JFK a couple of years ago was having some cracking sport in Feb close in for codling.

So answer your question yes you can if water clear but bait will always improve your chances and squid comes alive alot more in the winter months, mackerel and crab the other two top baits with worms baits for closer in along with the above.

Failing that ring a charter before you go otu and ask them, they will tell you first hand what has been taking the fish.

I think a simple combination use daylites or hokkais baited bottom hook rag ,middle hook rag and squid, with top hook squid ....

then see whats catching and overdose on that .... :)

This gives the combination of scented bait and visual lure, the reason behind the "which hook?" is simple fish on the bottom (bottom hook) will not be looking for squid, they'll be in the dirt looking possibly for worm, whilst fish off the bottom will be after squid or other fish and not expecting worm ...... :) and half way ... who knows :)

where you fishing from?

cheers
