Commercial fishing

I've been trying to fathom the commercial license rules !
I understand the principal of vessel capacity units but can't figure out
how that relates to what you can actually catch. If I go and buy an under
10m trawler with a CAT A license and 50 VCU what can I actually land ?

suggest you go to DEFRA's web site or Sea Fisheries Comission

most of the skippers I know don't understand em either, and the FPO's are often equally confused

as well as CAT A and VCU's you probably also need days at sea and entitlements, depends when the CAT A was issued, where the vessel is, and where it intends to fish as well

Someone I know put this site together:

Discussing fishing boats engines licences gear and fish

you might get an idea from there

you thinking of buying a boat/licence?

There is a lot more to it than just the units, it relates to the boats track record of landed catches.
If you are looking for a license then you will be wanting a Cat A which is uncapped, but dont let the uncapped part fool you, there are still quota within that and you would be advised on a regular basis how much fish you are allowed to catch.
It is very complex and it changes weekly so if you are actually thinking about it make sure you know exactly what type of fishing you want to do then do your homework.

I know 3 guys that have been testing the rules succesfully. Under 10m and power by sail/oars alone

no licence needed, no quota restrictions/entitlements or days at sea either, all that is need is RSS registration (£450ish), and if the boat's keel was laid before 2001, no Seafish or MCGA survey required either

they are creeling & longlining with a wee bit of drift netting thrown in during summer as well and doing ok.

probably the most sustainable, sensible fishing vessels in europe

I do fancy fishing commercially on a small scale and I realise it can be a hard life but I suspect the really hard bit is keeping up to date with the rules.

Thanks for website link Mark I'll spend some time on there. If they ever sort out the discards we may have the North-Sea teeming with Cod

One of the worst problems ia you might be doing ok then the trawlers come in land a big catch and then the quota is up and you cannot earn a living anymore untill next month

thats why there are so few small boats anymore

forget under 10, go for under 6 if its a powered craft - far fewer complications and less red tape

and you can often pick up a an under 6 boat with CAT A and shelffish licence already for less than 5 grand

findafishingboat.com

under 8 category, orkney and a plymouth pilot on there at that minute among others, both uncapped CAT A for 5 grand
