Late on in the summer I bought a Coleman Xtreme from United British Caravans on Sandy lane in Newcastle for £59 I think it was the 70 Quart version. Without doubt Cod start to deteriorate after a few hours in a warm boat, the skin mucus changes to being slimey jelly. I had previously used a large black plastic bin which I filled with sea water but being black the water soon warmed on a sunny day. I would change the water a couple of times on a long session. I don't have the space or inclination to fillet onboard but chop off the heads and into the container and when they are biting who has time!
I have only had one opportunity to use it but it was quite effective the only downside is once filled with fish and sea water it's damned heavy; the handles are flimsy. I simply emptied of water when I arrived at the marina and the fish keep cool till I get home and fillet them.
I have hatched a cunning plan for the coming season, I have invented the super sized ice-ball using balloons, I keep them in a freezer at -18c so a couple of them should keep the sea water cool for 10 hours or more. Hopefully they won't damage the fish.
Interesting thing about ice/water; to cool water from 1c to 0c may mean the removal of x amount of energy (specific heat, remember that from school) but to change water at 0c to ice at 0c takes the removal of 79 lots of x energy from the water (latent heat). Put simply a lot of heat has to go into ice to change it back to water but the water temp changes very little. My -18c ice balls should go down a treat and it saves pratting on with loads of little ice cubes in the fridge.
If the fishing carries on into next year I may be investing in another box !
