heard today the proposed cost of the licence as £23.50 from 2009.this is per person as well as i was informed.how the hell can they charge this when a coarse licence is less and they use some of this for re-stocking.will they use any of this revenue for re-stocking i dont think so.taxing your hobbies now what the hell next ???

mis-informed mark,my apologies but still another back door tax,VAT on bait next???

I think its probably already there!

ahh the joys of labour stealth taxes!! Funnily enough was having a conversation about this earlier, and tried to work out how much tax I have to pay to go fishing. 80 miles round trip to the boat = 2 gallons diesel, approx 7 quid tax! burn 30 quids worth of petrol in the boat, approx 24 quid tax. I gave up then and had gave em another 50p by having a beer and a tab

I've said before I wouldn't necessarily object to licence if, and thats IF there's some tangible evidence of what we're getting for our money, and thats the bit I have the problem with, or put another way Mr. Brown, can we have some lubricant next time you force us to take it up the tradesmen's??

why a licence to take the bairn though ???,ruining the enjoyment for a dad to take his kids out for the day, thanks for that !!!!.a lot of votes being messed about with here mr milliband

Great err, whats next a turn style at the pier gates or the road up the mull......i will pay it because i love the sport but its just shocking really.

I bet that in the summer months less than half the people on the local piers will have one.

When I was on holiday on the Isle of Wight many years ago, one of the piers there charged a small fee to fish from it, was used for the upkeep of the pier nice so I didn't object... think it was something like 50p but the pier was lovely to fish from and kept tidy at least...

the cost of going fishing for a coupl of hours
£ 10 petrol
£ 15 bate
£ 5.90 tabs
£ 5 for goodies not to mention all other equiptment
total £35.90 now a license that is mad the greed of the gouvernment!!!!!

*if* and I do say *if* the money is used to improve our stocks and the quality of the waters around our shores then I'm all for it. You're looking at £2 a month based on the current indications - I don't think that is going to break anyones bank, smoke half a tab a day less if it is!

my sentiments exactly

I can see that realistically what will happen is that the money will be sucked up in admin and policing of the licenses, but I still live in hope that some of it might be used for the greater good....

When you spread it across the whole year it doesnt sound too bad, but like others have said, we need to see somthing positive from the government departments concerned, if we continue to see the meagre fines imposed on the offenders of overfishing/landing of undersized fish etc then people will not buy a license as they do not see a benefit from it.
5150, i think it was sless that came up with a good idea last year regarding the state of South Shields pier, get the anglers and general public to pay to access the pier, it doesnt have to be much. It works elsewhere like you said and i would pay if it meant no pi**y stinking pier!

'cort owt mista'

a charge of even a couple of quid would keep a huge number of the ****wits off shields pier in the summer

I'd happily pay em a tenner to go on there if it were dickhead free which would have the added bonus of not being a ****hole either

Call me Mr Cinical but I think they'll still be there and no one to enforce it. Pay your extra per year and still put up with it. There's a two bass limit in Ireland and still debates on their sites about those that take and keep everything no matter what size. Can't see much changing except more rules which will catch out the easy touches. They'll not go for the thugs that threaten they'll go for Joe Public who just chances his arm.
