crab traps

I've stopped chasing crab, by that I mean I won't stress if I don't have any or can't get any as there are baits that are easier to come by...threads like these go the same way every time with people huffing and puffing their chest out and getting all emotional :D

another oft occurring thread is "what one bait would you use if you had to use no other?"...mine would be mussel ;) peeler crab is king in the right circumstance no doubt about it but there are alternatives...

tbh ive had most of my best fish on rag , just thought it would be nice bit of extra bait and something else to teach my son as fishing and footballs the only thing to get him off the xbox lol , but on my travels around the coast ive discovered a lug bed so thats something to investigate , what i find amusing is all the river and traps are taken but when i go digging i see 3/4 groups of lads checking the same traps , i see them doing the tour around looking shifty :D and for what i need/use its just as easy collecting them under rocks or buying a few .

I honestly think peeler is over hyped.
Never caught with peeler but had by best fish of good quality lug.
But another thought on the whole trap debate.
The area near Cowpen that has been mentioned a few times is close to me.
One thing that has struck me is that the amount of traps laid means that a large part of the river is unfishable.
Well i assume it would be as the traps would be a huge snag hazard.
Or am i wrong?

ive never fished up that far tbh ive not considered it not even sure how deep it gets at high but i suppose it would produce with the worm beds , i know nothing about the lower part from the fleece to monkeys never heard it being fished , i might have a reccy up there and chuck a line in sometime you never know . bound to be snaggy though so plenty rigs and home made rotten bottoms might be wise .

could,nt agree more

to the guys who are pro crab traps and see it as their right to harvest their peeler bounty i think that's fair enough, you have a point, but remember every thing that lives along our shore line is [owned] by no one, that goes for rag, lug, mussel ,razor clam, etc, to the guys who think that they can take anything from anybody and anything along our shore line you have a valid point, but ethically it stinks, put it this way, if i was digging for say rag and i have half a bucket of them and someone whilst i am digging with my back turned came up and took a good handful of them out of my bucket, technically he has not stolen them from me as i can't own them, but i think i would be a little ****ed off with him to say the least.
