Fished near Hartlepool power station Tuesday 4hrs . Was getting tugged every cast but hooks cleaned and polished. Had a belting tug and struck on lifting rod ,what a fight could feel bottom all the way in couldn`t lift it at all-- there it was the biggest crab known to man weighed 4lb 7oz and could run at 45mph also tried to grab all that went near it. A guy called DANNY came over and unravelled the mess as it had at least 30yds of line tied round it and was not hooked just tied up. gave it to Danny he said it would feed a family of 4 no problem. Last cast had a small flatty, put it back and called it a day. Nice to be out but roker pier next time its a bit easier to get to. Baits rag, mackie and kipper.
toonboy the day we fished the rnli there was a giant ish crab .ill try get pics up for u . it was big for me anyway . the body itself was the size of my trainers size 13 .
The last 6 or so sessions I've had out (at jarrow, shields beach, shields pier, marsden, roker pier, hendon) I've had the same thing - not a giant crab, but big pulls and knocks then clean hooks and no fish (might have been giant crabs, but never caught them!)
Spider Crab, horrible bloody things that not only nick your bait but will also cut your hook off. That one's just a babby, I've had some monsters when I lived on the south coast, 3 - 4lbers take some getting in, especially whan there is another 10lb of weed attached.
BUT... where there are Spider Crabs the Smoothhound are usually not far behind
Sorry don't have a clue how to use this kind of tecno .... my phone never gets used and is proper old and only use it so I can be contacted in emergency. Love your posts they keep me informed of whats going on as you move about a bit and have little comps which I may catch up on this year if that's ok. I spoke to you on Roker pier once I was with my mate little Alan you gave us a bit of good advice. I tend to go to a lot of places on my own now as Alan moved to Montrose Scotland . No doubt we will meet on Roker pier soon enough. This crabs body was 3 times the size of a spider crab and very dark in colour and a nasty bugger (bad attitude)
