Crabs

Just bought some peelers for trip out tonight....It's the first time I've used them and I'm still a little nervous...

Been reading all sorts of articles on preparation etc (got the elastic) - but one thing has stumped me...how the chuff do you remove the lungs without reducing the crab to a lump of mushy mess?

You only need to remove the lungs if you are gonna freeze them.

Once the shell is peeled off the side of the crab should lift up to reveal the lungs just nip them off with your finger tips.

when the crab isnt peeling properely you will find they are harder to peel and ya will end up with a lump of mush ,the best ones to peel are the ones that you see the shells cracking and the back of the shell is popping away from the underside

I've only bought a few (coz I didn't want to spend a fortune only to waste it) so i expect the first one that i try will be consigned to mush.....

Good job I bought ragworm as well - otherwise it'd be a long fishless night

Call me crazy.....

Call me crazy.....

...but....if I end up with mush with all my crabs (because of my sausage fingers)....do you reckon I could cram it in to a swimfeeder and lob it out alongside my hook bait?

Will do - cheers mate

Will do - cheers mate

Reet - well that's it then...all the questions have been asked. In about two hours time I'll be flinging the lead into the sea and hopefully pulling something other than seaweed and carrier bags out....

You'll either have a Catch Report or one where I'm spitting foam...

Laters all - cheers for your advice, time for me to put it all into practice

North Shields Quay - the beachy(!?) bit next to the old Lifeboat Jetty - casting onto the sand banks/mud flats

...........Just come back from work and had a look at the crabs I bought in my lunch hour....they look as likely to peel as my baldy head in todays sun (!!??) the back shells aren't popping or cracking....what did someone say about putting them in sea water to "force" them?

Glad I've got Rag for tonight
