Craster Beadnall and Newton 12 July

Talk about chalk and cheese last Saturday was chilly foggy and rather oddly was breezy at the same time compared to the wonderful weather on Friday: Oli and I set off from Amble marina at 0900 into an uncomfortable chop caused by the change to easterly winds which were stronger than forecast; on came the fleeces and long trousers!

We motored up to Craster first - water clarity was still good at around 20 feet but today the drift speed was over 1 knot: Using lures we both found codling up to 3lb but it was slow work so after an hour we opted to carry straight on up to Beadnall:

Here the fishing was much better: The largest codling was 60cm but there were a lot of them between 50-60cm: Moreover they were kelpies that fight harder than regular codling: As usual Oli had selected a pattern of lure that seemed to have a better action than mine and he was pulling in 2 fish to my 1 :( He also got very excited when he landed what he initially thought was a new boat record for a short spined Scorpion fish; turns out it was a long spined Scorpion fish but at 1'5lb it was still the biggest one we had seen with a face that only its mother could love :ROFLMAO:

We drifted over various marks up there and came across some hard-fighting coalies: Maybe only 45cm long but they pack a punch and fight harder than codling or pollack twice their weight:

It was good to see another pod of dolphins making their way south - dolphin sightings have been really good this summer

After 4 hours off Beadnall we dropped down to Newton and fished various marks around the Faggot and the red can: There were codling around as well as coalies and pollack but they were all slightly smaller than their cousins up at Beadnall

I have to keep a record of my catch for the Sea Angling Diary and found I had caught 45 fish excluding the smaller stuff and the mackerel and although Oli hadn't kept his score I know for a fact that he must have had at good 25% more fish than me: He also got a chunky wrasse that must have been between 3-4lb: Everything went back alive too: Not a bad session but not as good as the solo trip Oli did to Beadnall a couple of weeks back
