The recent accident to Mick Davison brings home the dangers that fishing in close proximity to fellow anglers can present.

As a pendulum-caster myself, I wouldn'r dream of attempting that method if there were other anglers in the close proximity.- it's got to be an 'overhead thump'

No matter what precautions you take re. strength and length of shock leader etc, there's always the possibility of line being nicked or damaged, resulting in a crack-off.

Mick was lucky, I remember young Paul Hurst on S.S. pier in the 70's. He didn't survive the result of an impact with a 6oz lead AND this wasn't even a 'Pendulum Cast'

You can't be too carefull!

Drof

I remember the Paul Hurst open every year on ssp in his memory.

Pendulum casting is ridiculous on crowded places as said before but as mentioned aswell, other forms of casting can be just as dangerous.Me and my brother were very lucky when we were kids on end of blyth pier.clever f***** came in between us and tried to blast it out, just over head but he let loose early and his sinker went up,we didnt even realise until it smashed off the pier inbetween us.

Problem with pendulum casting is the People doing it. I pendulum cast but not in crowded areas however if I am on the beach first and someone stands next to me then complains about my casting they can simply move. However lots of people think it's dangerous full stop it's only dangerous to be to the right of the person if he is right handed likewise left if someone is left handed.

death on roker

death on roker

no ones ever died on roker pier through a snap off from pendulum casting absolute garbage snd psck of lies

hello mate

hello mate

what kind of idiot was pendulum casting on a pier anyway , it should be banned on piers , wots the point your in deep water anyway , i use it only when i need to ie daytime or when there is a surf on , ive cast at n.e.s.a and n.w.s.a and at uksf , and they preach SAFETY ie knots , leader and so on , hope its no-one i know it gives the casting clubs a bad name :mad:
I have done some casting on the field there and even the best casters around have snap offs aswell like you say knots and gear ,when I 1st went I went with fast link clips thinking I could use them ,but couldn't because thay can straighten out ,had to be a oval link opened my eyes:o:o

there ia afew that get on S/S pier who do the pendulum, and often have snap offs. and its been alleged 1 guy in particular on end of pier who has snapped of twice and his leads have landed round 44 mark and the other on the double steps at 46 mark and been told all thought it was a big joke ,

theres a bloke gets on south shields pier
and thinks he can pendulum cast
joe the fireman
dodgy or what
says he hits 200 yards with bait
id say 100 max
he shouldnt be doing it

He'll be hitting less now he's using a shortened afaw rod the mans a muppet:);)

Why drag up a year old thread, which in itslef was a resurrection of a five year old thread, just to post this?

Half right. The lad that died took a 6oz sinker to the head when someone side swiping had the lead and line part company. Happened way back in the 1980s (can't remember exactly when).

So it wasn't pendulum casting (which if done safely and with consideration is far safer than a hell of a lot of other casts you see on the beaches and piers) but crap technique executed with dangerous gear that caused the tragedy.

Totally agree there are a lot bad casters that don't use the pendulum, like you say this thread's getting a bit long in the tooth
