Day Dreaming....

...sitting wistfully at the desk, looking at the fishing gear dreaming of a 49.6lb Cod snaffling a side of mackerel on a 10/0 drifted at a gentle pace over a favourite wreck...glass (aka plastic cup) of wine or even a cheeky beer in hand and the sun beating down and burning my already red baldy knapper to a crisp...

*sigh* is it Spring (then summer) yet? :D

I know you will beat me out, 6.30 soonest start on a weekend :)

As soon as that 1st tiger lands on the deck and you spend the end of the day rubbing the blood that it has splattered everywhere...thats when you know it's summer :)

9 weeks and counting :)

Behave with your nine weeks , you make it sound ages away , one step at a time , !st March fishing starts again (of course everything will no doubt be frozen solid) 16th March rivers open for coarse fish (thunder storme will have them all in flood) April the boating season starts (it's the wind that brings those April showers that's the problem) May, we actually start fishing.......... Ah! nine weeks ........you're right :red:

just to cheer you lads up, i am busy scanning all my articles to put on disc to give me a bit room. When the changes in catches are gradual you don't noticed how bad things are, just doing 1997, boats coming back with 5 or six fish over 20lb, on one trip a lad had three fish over 20lb, you would get 30lb fish at least twice a year and 1,000lb plus catches at least once a year. when you look at the comparison this way, you realise just how bad things have got. Feel and editorial coming on.

2 species i have seen a massive fall in numbers in my life time are sandeel and coalie, granted every fish has reduced in numbers but the coalie have just about vanished from our waters in any real number.

Just as far back as 2004 had a few days with over 50 coalie from the pier on redgills but last year only managed 87 the whole year boat and shore.

Anyway as Norman says a day out and a fish or two at the end of it is all we can ask for, anything more is a bonus.

Got to admit that i do enjoy my trips out at sea,but the fishing takes second place. I want to enjoy the day and the company of fellow crew and skipper. If i were to set targets and numbers to be caught, i fear the frustration of not reaching them would be to much and spoil the day.

used to set a maximum target, never reached it though, but no minimum
