decent cheap boat reel?

The thing is, you could spend between £50 and £500 depending on what you want/need. I've got 2 stand up rods 50 and 80lbs for the bigguns, a 20lb for sportier fishing in shallower water where big weights are not needed, two uptiders and I'm still not happy cos I'm after a 12/20 and something in the 30lb class.
There's a 1000 combos that may or may not suit your type of fishing but if you're wreck fishing a lot I would recomend a decent reel like a shimano TLD or one from the Penn range that has stood the test of time. Cheap reels always seem to break before cheap rods.

I've got a Shakespeare Ugly Stick Gold 20lb class rod matched to a Penn 320 GT2 and the combo price from Tony's tackle was 89.99 which I thought was good value. Matched up with 50lb Dynon 3000.
A Penn Penn 220GTO is £40.00 by it self, but I haven't tried one of those yet.

For a cheep boat reel you would not go far wrong with a okuma t15...its cheep and has a reasonable lever drag and a 3 year warranty.
BUT...cheep is what it says.
I like shimano lever drags but they are far from cheep.
Oblikta had a new penn 975ld that had me drooling last time we fished together...till it broke....but its not cheep.
You get what you pay for and the coment I hear from many charter skippers is that star drags are the cause of most lost fish... so remember you get what you pay for.
It all depends how much boat fishing you intend to do..my okuma has done a year of sheer abuse and still works which I call a result based on the way I abuse my gear. My tld 10 is 5 years old and reaching the end of its reliability if I am perfectly honest.
In most cases you get what you pay for...I just payed out for a Shimano Tiagra and hopefully it will outlast me.

Dave, penn were horrified and replaced it, the service was brilliant. I've used it twice since and reeling up a pound of lead with a light rod is effortless, well reccomended but like you say, not cheap

I've got, and is still my main reel a Daiwa Sealine 200 getting on for 15 year old now, seems unbreakable, solid proper built reel before china took over the world
if you see one on ebay I would recommend it, if its got an alloy spool, it'll be an old proper one, and they rarely go more than 15 quid or so

I did not know much about the sealine range but I aquired a two speed big one just before xmas. The reel retails at about 280 quid and I was a bit dubious since penn and shimano are the recognised players in the large reels market. But having said that in the trips so far this year it has performed well and has had several fish over 100lb to its credit without any sign of a problem.
It doesn't look as nice as the penn and shimano's btu its comforting to hear it may prove long lasting.

Buy cheap if you only intend to fish for a season or two your better off saving your pennies if you are going to fish over the next few years. I bought a very cheap shakespeare( 19.99) which has lasted around 10 months and have used and still do an ABU 7000c which I bought many moons ago for around the £100 mark. I guess the answer is if you intend fishing for a few years then buy medium to high price if you intend to fish this season and the next the you can probably get away with cheapy! but remember this is my experience only if you get it wrong then reeling in can be a reel DRAG
