Deep fried Mars Bars

Had one a few years ago in Glasgow, quite sickly after a belly of beer but they are popular.I think it was about eight years ago.Just read this......
The deep-fried Mars bar is alive and well in Scotland with more than a fifth of chip shops serving up the delicacy.
A study by NHS Greater Glasgow found 22% of Scottish take-aways had the foodstuff on its menu and another 17% used to sell them.

Researchers surveyed 500 chip shops and found children are the main buyers, with one shop selling up to 200 a week.

The first report of battered Mars bars being up for sale appeared in the Scottish Daily Record in August 1995.

Scotland has had a reputation as the home of the deep-fried chocolate for many years and it has become something of an urban myth outside of the country.

We can now confirm that there is no doubt, the deep-fried Mars bar is not just an urban myth

Dr Morrison
Greater Glasgow Health Board

But the findings of the health board has proved they are actually for sale.

The shops they interviewed also reported they have been asked to deep-fry Snickers, Creme Eggs, and pizzas in the past.

Dr David Morrison, consultant in public health medicine, said, \"We live in Scotland but we\'d never actually seen deep-fried Mars bars for sale.

\"We thought they might be fictitious. But the Scottish diet is a major health issue and it\'s important to know what the facts are.

\"We can now confirm that there is no doubt, the deep-fried Mars bar is not just an urban myth.\"

American mention

Dr Morrison and his colleague Dr Mark Petticrew decided to conduct the survey after they received a recent mention on US television\'s NBC Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

Their study is published in the December issue of the medical journal the Lancet.

The Mars bar was first produced in 1920 by Frank and Ethel Mars in Tacoma, Washington, in the US.

It was locally named the Milky Way bar but called the Mars bar in Europe.

I used to do a bit of shooting up around the Dyce area just past Aberdeen many moons ago and can remember them being on sale up there around that time. Never fancied deep fried chocolate myself though

god ive never had one of them for years ,you cant wack a deep fried fudge with icecream ,trick is to get the fat nicenhot so the batter cooks quick and the choccy dont melt,no worse than pineapple ring or apple fritter served as a sweet :P

was in edinburgh earlier this year and was in a chippy that did mars bars, bounty\'s, and twix\'s all deep fried. But possibly worse still was pasties and pizzas. Lad infront asks for pizza and chips and a pastie and chips. Out of the freezer comes a small frozen pizza. Straight into th batter then in the frier where the fish were cooked, same with the pastie. can\'t imagine anything worse. they must of soaked up half a pint of minging fishy oil apiece

Jim,

If he\'s into alternative puddings then here\'s some lateral thinking - Lasagne pudding !

You need some fruit pie filling - tinned or fresh from the garden. Spiced up if you want e.g. apple and cinnamon, Lasagne pasta (you might need to pre-soak etc.), tinned custard (or fresh if you can be bothered) and some flaked almonds (optional).

Build up in a lasagne dish alternate layers of pie filling, lasagne and custard as you would with a normal savoury lasagne, sprinkle the top with flaked almonds and cook in the oven as you would a normal savoury lasagne.

You could substitute Mars bar and banana for the fruit pie filling, toffee/caramel and banana are a good mix like Banoffe pie.

I will try it and let you know what I think Chris. Can\'t see any problem with it apart from the brain telling you it is wrong and pasta shouldn\'t be used as a pudding lol. It is just about tasteless anyway so should be ok.

Jim.

Bloody hell Jim !. Fully agree with you mate, the whole world has gone mad and Fanny Craddock is spinning in her grave :D :D :D

cheers.

[quote...... it is wrong and pasta shouldn\'t be used as a pudding. [/quote]

never stopped every school in the country serving up macaroni as a pudding along the lines of rice pud.

top banoffe pie tip here then. The ultimate caramel for a banoffee pie. Tin of condensed milk. simmer the tinn for 2 hours or more unopened and leave to cool. you can keep it for months without opening it, then just spread the contents on yer nanas and bake.

might sound mad but nearly every restaurant in the land make it that way

Yaaak Mark ,no sweet tooth here I\'m afraid .Was in Glasgow years ago and remeber the Mars bars and pies being fried as well as the queue outside the chippy at 10 am on a Sunday morning !!!!
Oh and I went back to my roots namely Walker and found my favourite chippy as you would expect taken over by non english....and selling fried mars bars , and they\'d stopped selling goood stuff like home made steak and kidney and leek puds .....not right at all, still sign of the times eh!

willywetegg thats the only way they cook scotch pies in chippies up here, no better way to cook em ;) as for the mars bars etc i have only seen that on the west coast, never seen it over here thank fuc*
