I've always preferred this style of lure for spinning...an original Dexter wedge can be quite pricey at a couple of quid, but you can pick up a RoyD "lookey likey" for half the cost...They're called Turbo Wedges...

Royd. Manufacturers of Fishing Lures. Turbo Wedges, Chrome on Copper

;)

Also equally effective are the basic sandeel shaped ones - cheap as chips too

i your right there hellish expensive gonna nip out on me dinner to see if i can purchase any of those turbo wedges, see if i can find a tackle shop in the peterlee area. Thanks a lot for that mate..

Dunno about down your way, but the ones I normally get are just a plain cheap and nasty fish-shaped spinner from Sports & Leisure in Blyth, think they were about £1.25 a go when I last bought some last year, always caught plenty of mackeral on them like, only thing I do to them is take a permy marker and colour the eyes in.

Are they ok for casting, i have tried a bit of spinning years ago but could never get any distance with the small spinners, thats why i was aking about the dexters wedge as it looks like it has a bit weight to it.

mackeral will take anything! the simple sprat type lures, basically chrome plated lead at a quid or so are pretty good, you can put a bend in them which gives them a much better action. usually they are around 25-30g so you can chuck em a fair way with a spinning rod

I've bought a mould for the lead sprat lures, makes 30g and 60g lures, I powder coat some, paint some, leave some plain, they all work well

dexters can be pricey, but aren't that difficult to make, length of chrome tube, fill with lead, when cool slice it at oblique angles like a dexter, stick some holographic foil on the exposed lead bits if you fancy, drill each end, splir rings and trebles, and off you go, a 6" length of tube will make about a dozen dexters, with split rings and hooks, will cost a couple of quid for a dozen.

Another question if you please lads, what sort of breaking strain line should i be using on the fixed spool reel and will i have to put a leader on, as i would when i am winter shore fishing, again many thanks.

I usually use 8lb line straight through for Blyth pier, more for the haul up the side than owt else.

cheers mate was thinking about the line size as i am either gonna have to lift fish up roker or shields pier, which is quite a way up.

well just got back from me dinner, found a tackle shop in horden. bought 2 lead lures covered in what looks like shiny tinfoil, look very sandeel type with cuts around for the scales, not sure how long they will last like, but at only a quid each will give them a bash tonight and let you know how i get on. Once again thanks for all the advice.

Reelsport has "Dexter wedges" in at £1.50 for 42gms ,which is a good weight for getting distance - they are really good ,i am down on the pier after work ,so hopefully bag a few for tommorrows tea :D

he also has the lead spinners coated in silver paint for £1 ,but i have found that these start to lose the paint and shine after a few casts ,bought some of them also ,but only as back up

i prefer braid with about two foot of 15LB mono (in case of snags) but i also tie the lure on with a rapala knot - dont know if it makes any dirrerence to the mackeral when using the lure ,but it hasnt stopped them
