Disgraced at fishing gear snobs.

not at all mate most fishermen are helpful no need to take the p.ss out of any1 gear catch just the same no matter what rod or reel you have ..... just take no notice mate and enjoy the sport

it's not the tackle that catches the fish it's the angler. I remeber an old bloke that used to fish Whitley Beach "Panama Joe" had an old rod and scarborugh reel, wore wellies, no fancy waders, those that didn't know him and had all the fancy gear used to take the micky, then watched as he pulled out fish after fish while they blanked.

There's a blast from the past - remember him well when I fished Whitley club as a junior, learned a lot from him and the other (now) old timers like the Nixon brothers. Back then it was the only way to learn - no easy-on-line-internet-answers-to-everything. Hope I can live up to their example helping less able anglers who want to learn.

Mathematically speaking, you'll generally find that the amount of gobsh!te these "anglers" come out with is directly & inversely proportional to their ability to catch fish..........in other words take no notice!

Gary :)

as already mentioned a few times matey, you use whatever gear you feel comfortable with. dont let anyone tell you that you have to use a certain make or kind of gear only to catch fish.

i have fished next to people with gear that is donkeys years old and they have landed more fish than me, if your bait is in the water you have the same chance as everyone else.

99% of the guys you see out fishing, in a tackle shop or on this site will give you sound advice and help out.

some people can go into a tackle shop, kit themselves out with the best, most expensive gear and still not produce any fish or anymore fish than you,

i do alot of salmon fishing, the club i am in is full of lardy dars, they have the best of the best when it comes to gear, they pull up in their big uber expensive 4x4s, i get out of my tiny car, put on my best geordie acent and fish next to them with my infearior gear, i still catch the same amount of fish as them if not more lol, tackle tarts ;D

you always get the jimmy sh*t crack, the guy that has been to elevenerriffe if you have just come back from tenerriffe.

i had the misfortune of having to spend a few hrs next to one a few months back on a pier, it was mobbed, you could hear this bloke from the car park a mile away, he was loud as fook, ended up fishing right next to me, he might as well of sat on my seat box (i always seem to attract them lol). started giving it the big i am, ''fished here for years and years, probs before you were born, blah blah blah''

after 20mins of bleeding lugs, he started fishing, had all of the gear, ended up chucking over me and 4 guys to my right, then nested up a few times.

kept on saying i should be doing this and that, i was over the moon when i pulled in a few fish. i didnt have the heart to tell him i lived 5mins away and had fished that place more than i can remember.

dont let anything like that put you off, enjoy the sport, you get alot of joy from catching fish your own way ;D

I've seen plenty of these types over the years. Got all the latest top of the range gear but not a clue why. I remember many years ago sitting on Amble pier with my 10ft rod and wee fixed spool, when a big lad with all the gear turned up. Spent 40 minutes setting up, asked us to move so that he could take a run up before casting. Five minutes later after cracking off he was asking if I knew how to tie a hook on properly.

often a problem with the shop sometimes as well - always full of the same 'hangers on' hovering about, know everything, look down on everyone

word to the wise to any shop owners - get rid of em - they spend little and put off a large number of customers, especially newcomers who are often a bit nervous about what's best suited for them and what they need and how much they can afford

couple of places I'll not set foot in anymore due to the usual bunch of feckwits propping up the counter

for what its worth, when I got back into fishing I bought a rod for a fiver at a car boot and wouldn't part with it for anything

'anglers' who take a long time to set up are normally the worst. That's my opinion anyway. Good anglers have everything sorted before they say tarra to the wife.

get into carp fishing and its worse, seems to be if you aint spent 4k on gear then your not going to catch anything, even if you do go down the wallet route theres always some tosser says something derogatory about the gear your using

its like all these rods that can cast 300 yards, great magic, thats assuming you can cast that far with the kit yourself, 100 yards with bait is a bloody good distance for 95% of guys that do fish, remember on merseyside turning up on the prom with my old zip2500, i had a small multi strapped to it and it was freshly loaded with 20lb braid, got myself in among a group that obviously had won the pools, no bait as i wanted to set the braid down before fishing that week end, three small casts, heard a few funny remarks about catch more with bait, then hit it, braid went out, i slowed it down and dropped the lead in, one of the `knowledgeable` came across admiring my skills as in his opinion that last cast must have hit close to 300 yards, obviously i was going to be invited into thier `casting` team, well untill i aquainted the tosser with the fact i had 150 yards of braid on, it had just hit the red ice backing and i cut the cast short, best part was i was well beyond thier best efforts, thinking back it was like a tackle shop display, its around midday, summer, they had the headlamps and pertrol lights out, the boxes were open displaying the gear they all had, the new floaties the lot ;)
heres a piccy of the area

just ignore that type mate, enjoy your fishing,i do occassionally frequent the odd tackle shop but would rather give good advice as this will help everyone fish in comfort ....

rods

rods

Hi Fella,

My first rod was a ron thompson zennorflex, it was a 10na from billys in north sheilds and butchered to hell, the reel was a 5 pound fixed spool from the junk shop near billys, and i cadged a bag off a mate and he gave me a load of weights and line and rigs, Weve all got to start somewhere,

Ive just done a bit of overtime at work and bought one decent thing each months that i need, started with a bix then weights then a rig wallet then i got a rod then a reel,

Perfection takes time :)

its not the gear

its not the gear

the thing is you prob catch more fish than them with your less expensive gear and when you slip down a muddy bank and smash your rod you will be glad it was £30 not £300...i rough ground fish with my trusty old ..well very old daiwa moonraker and i have no problems getting it out ...just catching..LMAO ..

I think this happens in every single sport! Nowt to worry about, most lads are decent, just ignore the tossers!! Thats what I do!!!!!

i totally agree but from time to time i end up asking what the problem is and if they dont like it just tell em to f**k off all the lads ive bumped into whilst have been great lads but you do get the odd tit

fishing gear doesnt have to cost the earth!

fishing gear doesnt have to cost the earth!

it doesnt mean that you have mega bucks to spend on gear, doesnt make you a better fisherman! if you are happy what you use good for you.but there many small minded people in this world and have all the gear but sadly dont have the brains to use,and i have seen my fair share in my 27 years of fishing...

you will find that biggest majority of us that go sea fishing are good guys but just like any other sport you still get these a***holes take no notice of them mate they just give us decent anglers a bad name

Came across this on Shields pier, just the once though. There were 2 lads on the end, both sporting the latest must have jackets/bib'n'brace suits, both with the latest must have state of the art rods'&'reels and both talking a really good talk. Now I've never said that I'm the worlds greatest angler well second after Robson Green. In other words I'm crap, I go in the hope to have an enjoyable day out. Well these 2 lads after seeing there gear and hearing there talk ended up making me look good,(not an easy task) after watching them on their sequence casting technique.
So I think the moral of the story is DONT fall into the Must Have The Latest Trap the only people who will thank you for it are the tackle manufacturers.
You may get the odd bit of micky take from your mates or club members but this is to be expected.

Its a well known fact that fish can recognise the top gear. Best hooks, best line, best rod, best reel, best boots, clothing and so on. With that in mind they only bite the baits connected to all the best gear.
Right 3.2.1. back in the room. I've only been fishing for two years, my first lot of kit (rod, reel, line, hooks, rigs, box and bag) I bought off a friend for £30 bit by bit I've changed it and bought slightly better kit. If you see those tossers again, tell em from me to &$&£^%(%£&£& OFF. Just enjoy getting out there. :p

does anyone rem when the shimano fst`s were the latest must have, increase your casting distance ?? i got one not long after they became available, yes i found i could empty the spool, right into the biggest birdsnest i have ever had :D:D tried and persevered, untill i decided enoughs enough and got my old abu 6000 out again, kept the shimano as a backup reel, that was untill a few years later it had never been used so i flogged it :D:D

I know that it's not the gear that catches the fish

...but theres nowt like good gear and the best that u can afford. The top end rods are brilliant and a 525mag a must IMO.
