DIY fishing booms

While the weather has been crap, i decided to fill some time in making some booms for fishing shads etc:
I had some strong cable ties in a drawer collecting dust approx 25cm long so, using a piece of spider wire, the tip heated up to an orange glow with a gas torch, made a hole through the square part of the cable tie for the 50lb line to run through, with a bead each side secured with rig crimps. At the hook length end, another hole using the same method about 5mm from the end to tie the mono line on. Simple, and i'm sure will be very effective. Don't use light weight cable ties as they are not strong enough and will snap where the hook mono line is tied when pulled firmly. Pic to see.

hello north east hav never used shads before do you use short length or long leaders or does it not matter also are they just for wreck fishing cheers

You must of used them before, your always out arnt you?

I use short like 2ft just to reduce the tangles alittle bit, either rough ground or wrecks when you have a bit of tide flowing, slack water is a no no, lose to many ring that period but catch some nice bits of metal.

Twin tails have always worked best for me fished the same way but shads twin tails they all as good as each other. :)

Think mine will ahve melted away by the time they get used again, only been out the bag once in 3 weeks.

I use about a 2 to 3 ft leader it does cut down on the tangles ,but really enjoy using the shads ,have loads of different colors ,but the blue seem to work best.just bought another 8pkts on E-Bay

honestly never used them always been hokeyes or mackeral feathers with rippers going on ebay now for some cheers for info might hav a short trip out tmorra winds are easing first light if i venture out

Been busy there Arthur :) you must be getting bored , how was the holiday  i made some out of stainless tig filler wire, bit tough bending it but they work a treat :).

Was away 10 days in the caravan, then 11 days in Spain, came back last thursday and still haven't been out yet. Hopefully have a go at the macky tomorrow with the winds dropping off. I tried making some booms with spider wire but struggled to get them 100%, then came up with this idea, looking forward to trying them.
Is Jester back in the marina now!

they look good. Have never used a boom for shads up here as they do tangle and the trace is no longer that 4ft just clip your lead on your snap swivel then put the swivel on the end of your 3/4ft trace on the clip too and lower down slowly never any tangles.

Look on sea otter 2 at whitby's website for a in depth explanation.

That looks simple and neat Arthur, I’ll have to give it a go. With the weather the way it is there’ll be plenty of time to make them.

Hi Arthur, 11 days in Spain you lucky devil :), nice tan i bet :D, I'm waiting for 4 small anodes to be delivered so i can fix them to the skeg, then it's back in the water....tomorrow night fingers crossed...

The tan's fading fast Chris, can't believe this crappy weather.:( You lads with boats permanently in salt water go through some anodes every couple of years. Small price to pay rather than fixed engine parts etc: Still no hurry to get her back in though looking at the forecast into next week.:(:(
