pest or no pest its a fish and we should respect our catch simples
Dog fish has became more of a sport for most anglers, not that they give any fight, but when there nothing else going on they fill the gap,yes they can become a pest, many moons ago there were loads of them of the tyne
now getting back to balcary to name but a few places held hugh cod also the ruin narrows, now ware did they all go ???????????????????????
I know mate I used to fish It as a kid with my family , the commercial lads cleaned it out what a shame Its memory's I will never forgetThe Clyde fishing of the late 70`s was ruined by the greed of the commercial boats trawling within 50 metres of the shore,Rhu,Holy Loch,Loch Long and the rest are finished with barely a fish of note to be caught maybe the odd conger/pollock at Furness that apart its the odd Dogfish and Mackerel in Summer ....

Your right mate long gone ,when you tell lads about them days gone buy they laugh at you ,bamboo rod side winder reel monster worms and good fish ,,great times,,, The greed of the commercial lads put pay to that what a shame ,they did not understand the outcomeWe used to fish the Kilmun Pier and the Point in Holy Loch funny enough on the first May Bank holiday every year collecting peeler on the way through the Clyde,i will never forget a local asking what we wanted the crab as there was loads of Ragworm under our feet,my best fish was just under 9lb but you could get 20 fish in a good session mainly in the 2 - 5lb bracket, but unfortunately those days are gone we rarely go north now with Wales being our usual destination .....
IT was only 42 year since"aye them was the days"
you old buggers![]()
Think you would be lucky to get a good cod there nowI was talking to a lad that used to live in Auchencairn when I was on Roker pier one night, he was married to some mad Scottish bird but that's another story, he fished Balcary flat rock quite a bit of the time he was up there, and he was aying although the amount of big cod has dropped in numbers over the past few years it still throws the odd big one out, long way to drive to blank thoughI always preferred the point to the flat rock, less of a hike as well

I will hold my hands up to be one of many guilty of the above offence,at the time in the early 80`s we believe there were that many dogs we couldnt effect the numbers over there, mainly lsd but should the spurs show which the did occasionally then they were met with the same fate,30 years on and a lot wiser you cannot understand how or why it was allowed to go on and let be honest having to carry 50lb of dogs over farmers fields etc was no fun either, great to see limited catches now which encourages targeting other species let face it there was no skill in launching heavy two hook flappers baited with rag/sandeel just a numbers game ...
